Unlike John Muir of the Sierras or Horace Kephart of the Smokies, Thomas Lanier Clingman did not leave a diary or journal expressing his deepest thoughts or his internal sentiments. He chose to leave a collection of speeches and letters to record his life. He never married and never had any close family members to save personal items.
