When freedom fighter Rand Solis allies himself with young Kairma, the Heir to the Crystal, they discover in order to heal the world, both must sacrifice friends, religious beliefs, and political philosophies. Together they learn that every political philosophy is perfect in a given moment, but moments are fleeting.

As winter turns to spring in the high mountains, the small band of Survin refugees is violently divided. While faith crumbles for one, another's is renewed, but the gulf between them threatens to become impossible to bridge. Kinter, lost in the shadow of her sister, Kairma, maneuvers to seize the Crystal and displace Kairma as Vice Miral.

Collin learns he will be forever barred from Kairma by the evil carried in her blood unless the power of the Crystal can be realized, and although Ris would like to be cured of his disease, he, too, fears the untapped power of the crystal.

Bearing the weight of the most powerful object known to mankind, Kairma must choose between returning to Survin, and ignorance, or trusting powerful strangers. At seventeen, will Kairma make the right choice?

Excerpt

“Who are you? What are you? Are you a God?” Ensaris repeated.

Matthew needlessly translated for Ensaris as she looked at the other team members, considering how to answer. The people of Cheyenne were obviously different from the Survinees, but they weren’t gods, although, the idea appealed to Ensaris. “I am Ensaris of Cheyenne. We are human... but we are a different... race.”

Kairma looked puzzled. “Race?”

Ensaris thought about this for a moment. It wasn’t the line of questions she’d anticipated. “Different races are like hawk, eagle, and dove; all birds but not the same. Or red ants, black ants, small ants, and large ants.”

Kairma sucked in her breath. “But you look like one of the ancient gods.”

“I do not look exactly like the vision before you, though I am very much like you. This is a holographic image. Its purpose is to contact you.”

“What is holo... holographic?”

“It is light that is shaped into pictures and directed to a position in front of you.”

“You’re made of light?”

Ensaris silently cursed the length of time it took to relay the signal. “The image in front of you is made of light. My physical body is several hundred miles away from you.”

Kairma reached out to touch Ensaris, and when her hand went through the image, Kairma bit back a scream.

Gently motioning toward a rock, Ensaris said, “I have a lot of information to give you. Please, sit down and make yourself comfortable.” Kairma was too nervous to sit so Ensaris continued. “You must understand the past before you can decide what to do in the future. You carry something you call the Crystal. It is a very important object to us. It is actually a Kloussen Drive.” Kairma’s hand unconsciously tightened around the Crystal.

“Please leave the Drive on the rock before you, so that it may recharge.”

Kairma cautiously set the Crystal down again. “What is recharge?”

“The Drive has a small power source of its own. The power operates a receiver and a transmitter.”

Kairma shook her head and sat down, looking hopelessly lost. “What is a receiver and transmitter?”

“We have unfamiliar words in our language because we have a different level of technology. I will try to explain the unusual terms to you when it is necessary to your understanding.” Ensaris was feeling frustrated. Now that the problem of language inflection was better, she realized their vocabularies were vastly different. It was like trying to explain the color purple to a blind man.

Kairma unexpectedly asked. “What do you want from me?”

Ensaris smiled, this was more like it. Get to the point. “I want you to bring the Kloussen Drive to me.”

Kairma pondered the request for a long time before asking, “Why?”

Startled by the question, Ensaris was confused for a moment. Why would Kairma not want to bring her the Drive? “We need it. The Drive will replace the one we lost. We can fix many things with the information concealed on the Drive you carry.”

Kairma chewed her lower lip. “The Crystal, or this Kloussen Drive, conceals information you want?”

Ensaris nodded enthusiastically. “Yes. Yes, it does. We can do wonderful things with it. It is the only one that exists.”

“I don’t know,” Kairma said slowly. “Maybe you would do something bad with the information.” The look in Kairma’s pale blue eyes was calculating, almost defiant.

A flash of fear gripped Ensaris, and she looked to the others in the Com Room.

Nathan cringed, speaking low enough the transmitter wouldn’t pick up his words. “You might want to reconsider the way you ask this girl for the Drive. She’s been trying to keep it away from the man they call Narvin. A man she believes killed her friends and family. She’s not going to part with it just because you insist on it.”

“I’m sorry. I’m out of time,” Ensaris said and signaled to Nathan to cut the feed. She needed to rethink her tactics. Kairma was obviously primitive in appearance and ignorant of technology, but she was a proficient thinker. Ensaris hadn’t expected the girl to question her authority. She may look and sound like a child, but brutal life experiences Ensaris couldn’t imagine had made Kairma wary.
