Today’s music scene is mostly driven by singles and music videos. Different from the past, an artist today can cash in big simply by making a couple of good singles and converting them into mobile ringtones. It’s a time where image is more valued than talent and artists function more like businessmen seeking to make their name into a powerful brand capable of selling everything from sneakers to energy drinks. While it’s great to see more and more artists controlling their careers and achieving financial success, the sad truth is that, today, there no longer seems to be a need and/or desire for an artist to make a full-length quality album. Don’t get me wrong, there are a few artists who consistently put out good albums but for the most part, today’s music industry seems to consider “a good album” to be one that consist of, at least, 2 or 3 good song. Simply put, the bar has been lowered when it comes to making Rap albums, but let me be fair and acknowledge that, this low standard exist, not only in Rap, but all forms of popular music nowadays.
