Excerpt
As a psychology student I was fascinated by Rorshach ink blots, used to diagnose patterns of perception and personality. I began to create my own ink blots and outline what I saw within them. This technique rescued me from an impasse when I worked as an activities director at a senior center. Each day I prepared a table for water color painting, and each day the table filled up with older clients who sat and talked--but would not paint. "I don't know what to paint,” "I can't paint" were common refrains. One day I gave up and decided to just enjoy painting myself. I sprayed a large paper with water and splattered inks and paints of contrasting colors onto the paper. Then I folded the paper in half and blotted, folded it again and blotted, until it had a symmetrical design. Afterwards I laid a clean paper on top of the blot and made a print. The viewers were fascinated! They poured over the blots: "Do you see an elephant?" "Oh look, here's a child in its mother's arms!" "There's a flower, a face, a man running away," “a woman hiding behind a fan.” "Quick, outline what you see," I told them. And without a trace of self-consciousness they did. After that, they created their own blot paintings with great enthusiasm. It makes all the difference when you don't have to do anything and can just discover what is already there.
