Chapter 1
Mattie, July 21, 1969
I'm so glad we got to watch the moon landing together. We'll remember this date forever, won't we? July 21, 1969. A man, an American, is on the moon. We saw it right here on the television in my living room. I think we've been sitting spellbound for over two hours. "One small step for man, one giant leap for mankind." Imagine what Commander Armstrong must have been thinking as he made that descent. The Eagle has landed! We'll probably see it replayed over and over for years to come.
Come on into the dining room and have some of my Perfection Salad with lime Jell-O, carrots, and cabbage like Aunt Susan used to. I'll fix us sandwiches with the cheese pimento spread I made yesterday. There's so much to talk about now that you are here.
You must be wondering about everything that happened here. I've always loved telling stories, but there is so much I have never told to anyone before. Lately it's the parts of the story that have never been told that have been weighing on my heart. So many broken lives, so many dreams unfulfilled, so many surprises God has revealed. So much left unsaid. If you were to read my journals you would not see much written down there. You'd see notes on the weather and what I fixed for meals. I recorded if we had taken a drive or I'd gone to a church meeting.
