    MARAUDER WOMAN

         Robert J Gordon

Former NATO Special Forces Colonel Don McDougal and RCMP officer Sherry Trottier successfully defend a senior Canadian government minister from an unexpected attack while in Ottawa preparing for a clandestine mission. McDougal heads an international strike force contracted to perform missions most countries will not allow their own military to carry out. The contracts demand an exorbitantly high price. Whether attacking villages supporting terrorists, assassinating political figures, or destroying national opposition McDougal’s Marauders together with similar insurgency groups from France, Germany, and Russia disregard laws regulating warfare conduct including Geneva Convention protocol.

The Marauders accept a contract from Al Qaeda to dispose of an Afghan leader. The Taliban warlord Muhammad El Sjad is privately exporting drugs grown in mountain villages using a Russian connection. The activity contravenes the terrorist organization fund raising rules.

The mission requires a combat qualified woman acting as McDougal’s wife to gain access to the villages in the Kush Mountains of the Afghanistan/Pakistan border region. The pair plans to infiltrate the warlord’s territory disguised as philanthropists representing a charitable organization funding agricultural projects. An exhaustive search of international police and military personnel files results in former nurse, police officer, military intelligence specialist, Sherry Trottier as the ideal candidate for McDougal’s mission.

To assure Al Qaeda and Taliban researchers accept the legitimacy of the pair travelling as a married couple Trottier suggests a short-term marriage arrangement with a foolproof back dated marriage certificate. The situation leads to romance both parties find appealing but in the beginning are reluctant to accept as anything other than part of the mission. The prohibitive romance eventually becomes a major influence in the lives of the couple’s adult children and personal relationships.

McDougal must meet with European allies when the mission appears compromised. The diversion allows Trottier to travel home and make intelligence headquarters contact to report assignment progress. She discovers a breach of mission confidentiality originating with a highly placed source in the military.

Military intelligence recognizing the benefit of a mother/son relationship to uncover the source endangering the mission assigns Trottier’s recently graduated military officer son as military liaison officer with McDougal’s Marauders. The liaison role includes involvement in the planned attack on the warlord’s mountain stronghold offering NATO an opportunity to end the Marauder role as a freelance strike force but complicating the personal lives of McDougal and Trottier.

An incident during the Marauder planned attack on the mountain village involving a drone aircraft meant to destroy the Taliban warlord mountain stronghold places the entire operation, the military component, and Marauder strike force in extreme jeopardy leading to an unexpected outcome.

GUNFIRE ON THE HILL
Canada’s parliament buildings stand on a hill overlooking the Ottawa River. The banks of winter snow after a blizzard are less appealing to the average visitor than the picturesque tulip-filled gardens of early spring. The multicolored flowers are a gift from the Netherlands government for supplying sanctity to the nation’s queen and family during World War II. The summer gardens, surrounding walking paths and far stretching green lawns attract thousands of visitors just browsing the myriad of government buildings and cultural centers. Some are there to attend various ceremonies taking place at Canada’s National Memorial commemorating the nation’s war dead. Blazing autumn colour is the crowning fall attraction, strategically intermingled with maple, yellow birch and a special selection of green and brown native trees set among evergreens. The grounds are usually a hive of activity most days, with members of parliament, staff and guests coming and going, conducting government business. Groups are usually touring citizens or protesters showing displeasure with some proposed government law. Security restricts much of the area, fenced off to protect the site since the 9-11 twin tower attack on America. Security is paramount when the Prime Minister is in the parliament buildings. Even government cabinet ministers get some degree of protection against possible attack. Gunfire erupted as Security Minister Geoffrey White stepped into the back seat of a waiting limousine at the parliament building main entrance. The cabinet minister was not a primary target of any known terrorist group. However, he was under attack and Don McDougal needed to make certain the government minister survived the attack. Two civilian security guards and probationary RCMP officer Sherry Trottier formed today’s security unit.
White was relatively vulnerable when the first volley of automatic weapon fire ripped into the metal and glass inches above his head. McDougal ran to the limo and unceremoniously pulled the politician outside, shielding him with his own body. Hearing the rapid-fire of an automatic police revolver brought a sense of relief. The return fire meant Constable Trottier was still standing and returning fire. McDougal’s heart began to pound faster when everything went silent. He rolled sideways and released the holster clasp on his automatic-firing service pistol.
Sherry Trottier stood motionless with her gun reloaded and pointing at the still body of a man with an automatic pistol beside his outstretched motionless hand. Another man lay on the ground near the corner of the nearest building legs twitching and bleeding from a stomach wound. A rapid-fire assault rifle was on the pavement a meter away. The female civilian guard leaned against the limo with tears streaming down her cheeks while the male guard sat on the pavement against the rear wheel with blood seeping through the fingers on his chest.
“Are we clear?” McDougal shouted looking cross the driveway where Trottier crouched partially shielded by a fence post on the lawn.
“There is another gunman,” she warned.
McDougal tightened the grip on his pistol as another series of shots rang out from the street corner near the sidewalk leading to the main parliament building entrance. The wild volley ripped into the shrubbery a short distance in front of the limousine.
Hel motioned a silent order to Trottier to be prepared to cover his move then ran crouched towards the bleeding guard.
The wound looked serious.
“Keep him awake until help arrives.” McDougal ordered of the female guard. The woman dropped to her knees and began talking rapidly while loosening clothing covering the wound.
Another blast of gunfire ripped into the limousine hood, as a man firing an AK 47 rifle bolted into view from around the corner of the building. McDougal’s gun sounded a split second later with the entire magazine virtually separating the shooter’s head from his body.
