Huge shards of lethal crystal death burst outwards, along with a thousand tiny pieces, which sprinkled down like cascading rain.
As they vaulted out into the open space above the warehouse, Keeno clamped his left arm, like a brace, around the man’s throat. With his right hand gripping his jaw, he jerked his head backwards with a brutal force which snapped Colm’s neck in mid air.
The morbid sound reverberated as the two silently plummeted to the floor, and then struck with a sickening crunch.

Quantum Assault
I want to start by saying that I really enjoyed this book, but I had one issue – there were a lot of ‘intelligent’ sounding words used. I know it sounds stupid, but they jarred with the reading and they weren’t necessary. There were a million other words, every day words, that could have been used instead. The main problem with it, is that their use really didn’t seem to fit the story or the characters. Words like ‘catalyzed’ have their place in a story, sure, but things like ‘tendrils of boreal cold’, ‘panoply’, ‘torpidly’ and ‘stertorously’ just don’t seem to gel with the story or characters.
There was a lot of information thrown at us, in Chapter 1, which made me doubt whether I would enjoy the rest of the story. However, this was a minor incident in this chapter which didn’t reoccur. I understand the need for this information, as well, so it isn’t as big an issue as it might have been. We do need to know what OPP, RCMP and ATU stand for, particularly since I’m from the UK and this book is based in Canada. It seemed a little like an information dump, but it has a reason.
I really liked the MC Keeno. He’s a normal, relateable guy, who is kind of fun. Janene is the same, and I really like their relationship. Jake is a cool, laid-back, fun guy but I have a feeling he’s not what he seems. But that may be my overactive imagination and having watched too many crime shows. I also really loved K-Joe, who was a fun, interesting character. Eleina is so courageous and feisty.
There was a nice sense of description and believable police action. It wasn’t over the top or cliché at all. There was also a very nice sense of equality between action and investigation. I knew from the beginning that I was going to enjoy the story.
Nb83 was a really unique, and terrifying, concept for the story. It’s use is obvious, without the author having to go into brutal detail. The whole human trafficking theme is handled seriously, but confidently and tastefully. The author is sympathetic, while being intelligent and showing both sides of the story. There is no feeling of the author choosing a side, as he shows all aspects as is necessary in the story.
I don’t want to go too much into the plot, because this story is one worth reading, but I will say that I really loved the ending. I loved the nearly worldwide chaos that Keeno causes, and how it was all down to Eleina – one brave girl who fought back against her captors and escaped to tell the world about what was being done to her and countless other girls. It was a very neat, very logical ending. It didn’t feel unrealistic at all and no characters fates were missed either, which I particularly like.
The entire story is believable, clever and full of intrigue. You can tell the author has experienced similar situations as Keeno from the careful attention to detail that reads easily and naturally, as the flow of the story. However, it does feel incredibly long to read. It feels like it takes forever and sometimes the writing can be a bit long-winded with words or phrases that feel unnecessary and judder and jar the flow of reading.
Overall, I look forward to reading more of this writer, especially if that entails more Keeno McCole stories.
