Prologue
You know you’re in trouble when your attorney tells you that you are safer in prison than in the real world. That is what I was told after my bond revocation hearing on January 28, 2008, which subsequently led to a 70-month federal prison sentence. It was 9 am and I was at my Pretrial Officers’ office checking in at my monthly visit in the Edward R. Roybal Federal Building in downtown Los Angeles. I had the flavor of the month with me in the waiting room and I was called back for my appointment. No sooner had I put my briefcase down with my financial documentation inside it showing my earnings for the past month than two U.S. Marshals came from behind the door, put a warrant down on the desk in front of me and said I was under arrest for a new indictment. My first reaction was Ah, Florida. I said, “Florida?” They said, “No, California.” My mind went blank…what exactly in California? Check fraud, credit card fraud, bank fraud, identity theft, racketeering, money laundering? The list of possibilities was endless… In a very meek voice, I said, “For what?” They replied, “Embezzlement.” BINGO! The light bulb went off. My out loud voice said, “Shit!” My inner voice said, “I’m screwed”. And with that, here’s my story...
