The stories have as their background the city of Townsville, northern Queensland, Australia. Townsville is a garrison city with a strong presence of Army and Air Force(RAAF) personal. A military aspect provides a theme that runs thru the lives of the people written about. Four stories are modern; one tells of the time a young Australian man fought in the Spanish civil war and one tells of two young people, one of whom wants to join the army but is restricted because of his condition. The follow-up book is titled POINCIANA and follows the life of one of the soldiers written about in the first book.

In the early days of high summer he wore sunlight like a multi-hued cloak. The rays danced over him like tiny birds and he longed to strip off his clothes and be embraced by many fluttering wings.
...His eyes were like sea water changing colour with the light. When walking from the burning dry tropical sun into the frosty mess air enriched with the smells of the men; sweaty uniforms, dirt encrusted boots, stale after shave, sour breath, he was in the midst of it with eyes turning from green to light blue....
