Anyone who works night shift knows there’s something different about the acoustics, especially in the early morning outdoors. Sounds are so crisp; especially during the summer. This morning, the most pronounced sounds are that of occasional vehicle traffic.
Actually, on duty Security Guards treasure the occasional passing of a vehicle. Having something to look at makes the night shift go much easier. Plus, they marvel at drivers reactions to the Police speed trap across from their post. Most of the time; well all the time, they have no idea police are there until they are pulled over.
This is the case with a swift moving Mercedes Benz. As it thunders down the ramp of the South Capitol Street Bridge in Washington DC, it blows past the speed trap. Its direction is south bound just as the DC Police cruiser that has taken chase.
“Got another one says one Security Officer.”
The driver checks his tachometer and confirms it’s within the posted speed limit. Within a few short minutes, a vehicle is observed in the rear mirror. Before recognizing its origin, the driver sees blue and red rotating lights.
Shortly, the driver pulls over to the side of the road; as the police.
The police cruiser searchlight wobbles until a narrow beam of light fills the drivers’ side mirror. Preparing for a police stop, the driver turns on his interior light and rolls down his window.
Soft gravel is heard with every crush of the Officers feet. Then what appeared as a silhouette is recognized as a Police uniform faces the driver. The driver makes a greeting to the Officer as he bends at the waist to view inside.
Expecting to hear the standard request for drivers’ license and registration, the driver braces himself. Instead, no words were exchanged but another figure is seen approaching.
Police stop concludes. Dispatch isn’t contacted.

The book appears much longer than what I thought but I really loved the story line and all of the mysterious twists and turns.
