Marauding King Ullerick kidnaps Andre's betrothed, Juliette. While in pursuit, Andre meets Alfred, an old knight who entertains Andre and his men with stories of his colorful life as a warrior.

Warrior of the Dusk is a sweeping medieval adventure from the author of The Paladin of Callendro. Andre arrives at Oberlon to discover that his betrothed, Juliette, and her family have been taken by the conqueror Ullerick, who is transporting them to his mountain kingdom. Andre and a small group of knights take off in pursuit of Ullerick's army, hoping to offer terms to the warrior king that will secure the families' release. Along the way, Andre and his men encounter an old knight named Alfred, travelling alone. Alfred knows the territory well and Andre enlists his help in tracking Ullerick's hoard. To pass the time during their journey, Alfred tells stories of his long and colorful life. From his early days with the raiders of the North Sea, to crusades in the holy land, the old knight weaves a tale of adventure, romance, brutality, and heroism through the middle ages.

Excerpt

In a few days all preparations for our departure had been made and we were underway. As we sailed out of the bay and turned south, a strange feeling came over me as I recalled the voyage I took to Aran with my father so many years before aboard a Varan long ship. That journey was filled with excitement and expectation mingled with the sadness that I felt over the loss of my mother. I had little enthusiasm for this new voyage, and I wondered if my last battle would be fought on the desolate sands of the place called the holy land. There would be no one to mourn my death, my only companion being my wolfhound, Disa. But it was my duty to serve Sir John, who served King Charles, and if I was to die I hoped it would at least be in battle and not from some disease.

Tom has given us an impeccable plot which moves from story line to story line with a smoothness that carries us beyond the characters and into the historical essence of the time. The pages are filled with unforgettable characters filled with secrets and tales rich in detail and nuance. Moving from suspense to suspense this ride of the warrior will thrill and amaze as your travel down the dangerous trails. Again, a must read from Mr. Nelson. Can't wait for the next one. Bravo.....

This review is from: Warrior of the Dusk (Paperback)
If you enjoy reading about medieval adventures, then this is a book for you. With vivid imagery, Mr. Nelson weaves the tale of Andre and his band of knights, and Alfred, an older knight who joins them on their mission. Their mission begins when Juliette, Andre's betrothed, is abducted by the fierce king, Ullerick. While in pursuit of Ullerick, Sir Alfred regales the young knights with tales of his life. He describes many great battles, and loves, won and lost. Throughout all these tales, what remains steadfast is his commitment to honor and duty. As with most tales, good does eventually triumph over evil, but not without a price.
While I enjoyed the story, I felt there was a bit too much focus on the battles and would have preferred more development of the Andre/Juliette story as well as the relationship between the knights. However, if you are more interested in adventure and epic battles than romance, I think you will find this a very good read.
