My story is a true confession of how I lost and found my faith in Indonesia and The Philippines.
Chicken Soup for the Soul books, as you may know, are collections of true stories relating to a theme chosen by the editors. "Finding My Faith" has stories about finding faith of many different sorts.
My story relates my experience in Indonesia where I lost faith in a caring God because of all the poverty around me. I thought, "If God really cared about us, He wouldn't allow all this suffering." (There were a lot of people suffering in Indonesia.)
When the children and I were evacuated to Clark Air Base in the Philippines, I was in deep depression, partly because of the result of having a typhoid-like fever and partly because of my sin.
With the loving, persistent guidance of a missionary, I found my way back to God: I found my faith!

When we ate in restaurants, we always ordered more food than we could eat, knowing it wouldn't be wasted. Children stared through the plate-glass windows and rushed in at the end of our meal, giggllng. They scooped our leftovers into tin cans, then flew out the door before the waiters could shoo them away. My heart ached for them.
