Enjoyable on a Number of Levels
I discovered `In Many Ways' by complete chance in Kindle Bookstore.
It proved to be thoroughly enjoyable on at least three levels including 1) as a thriller with some real depth;2) because of the author's entertainingly clever and often amusing use of language; and, 3)for the person like me who has had more than a nodding acquaintance with Glasgow (there as a student), as a reminder of formative days long past.
I look forward to reading the author's next book Pandora's Pitbull.
Celtic Noir at it's Best
In Many Ways is everything a thriller should be, (fast-paced, great plot, unforgettable well-observed characters, with more sharp twists and vertiginous turns than a drive through the Highlands) but with two bonus extras: a fresh, inventive use of language and a sense of fun.
If Ian Rankin had a sense of humour he'd be Peter Carroll.
A Brilliant and Compelling Read
A brilliantly written and compelling story, with as many twists and turns as there are wonderfully imaginative descriptions and metaphors.
The characters are just that, real characters - you almost feel like you know these dodgy Scottish geezers, not that you'd want to.
Despite containing some appalling gangster behaviour, I still found the story to be amusing at the same time.
The author's writing style makes this story a real (virtual) page-turner. Once I started it, I couldn't put it down - only pausing for inconvenient things like food and sleep.
I hope Peter continues to write more stories of this quality. He has a fan in me.
I don't have a Kindle, but I downloaded the free Kindle reader and found it really easy to read on-screen without getting tired or getting a headache.
