He awoke in the middle of the night with a start and the sudden urgent knowledge that he was not alone. He leapt up from where he fell asleep at the mouth of his cave in a foetal position after the waking nightmare of the evening before. His eyes felt swollen and his head ached but he shook himself awake and looked about him to find the source of this feeling of being observed. He melted into the wall and listened. He was proud of his sharp hearing and it served him well over the years. A slight noise from his right caught his attention and he strained all of his focus in that direction. The sound came again and this time he knew what it was; breathing. Someone or something was inside his cave and breathing at him in the dark. Oh how he wished he had his night goggles from Moxal 3 on right now.
Silently he reached down and slid the knife from its sheath at his hip and at that very moment something lunged at him. Instinctively he moved to the side and as he did so, the knife in his right hand entered the man’s body and killed him, the poisoned spear in his hand falling to the floor. It all happened in such a rush, Vincent didn't mean to kill the man, he would not have wanted to and now in the space of a couple of minutes he had woken to find the home he made for himself invaded by a hostile alien with a poisoned spear that would definitely have killed him within three days. He suddenly felt very alone and far from home, but where was home? He had no idea but at that moment there was one thing he did know. Home was not here anymore. He would have to move to another location and start over.
Within an hour he packed up all of his belongings and was on his way. He carried the body of the man up to the top of the cliff and dropped him over the edge so that if his fellows found him they would assume he had fallen and would not realise that an alien humanoid was among them and decide to come looking for him with those poisoned spears. As was his habit, he thanked the man for giving his life so that he could live before dropping the body over the cliff and he genuinely felt very sorry. He had never killed anyone before except in the line of duty during his military service and it did not feel good at all; after all he was the invader here and the guy was only defending what he saw as his own territory. If he moved briskly he should be able to make several miles before the sun came up so that if the group of humans did decide to follow, he would have a good head start on them. He did not think they would follow; he would cover his tracks well enough but it was always best to be ready just in case.

Full of intrigue & suspense
If you enjoy a good bit of sci-fi mixed with paranormal then this book should do it for you! ;) This book was a good read! It has a ton of detail put into it. The author takes us on a journey full of intrigue & suspense.
Great storytelling!
Above all else, I love a good story. And while elements from various stories were pulled into one, the way the author does it makes for quite a fantastic read. The characters are believable and offer up an intricate weave as the good guys race toward fulfilling the prophecy, all the while the shadowy bad guys are doing the same. The twists and turns that befall the characters, and the wonder of finding love through dreams, all kept me hooked. I recommend this book to anyone who loves good SciFi storytelling. The races are all fun, and while I'd have loved to see more of the bad guys, there was so much going on that you really didn't notice until the story was over.

A Fantastic Science Fiction Novel

I love science fiction, so when I was offered this book, I grabbed at it! I'm glad I did, because I loved it!
Farra is a human from Earth. She is a very strong character. She is very tenacious, has a will of iron and is dangerous with a knife! I liked her very much. She has been chosen for a very dangerous mission. Will she succeed?
Vincent is a very enigmatic character. I liked this character very much, but he didn't feature much in the beginning of the story. He is very much a loner, but being framed for a crime he didn't commit, he has become a fugitive.
This was an exciting read that kept me hooked from the first page! Science fiction is a subjective genre, but it allows the author to create beautiful worlds and fantastical characters. Add in a touch of suspense, and you get an adventure of galactic proportions! The author of this book has done just that. The descriptions of the characters and the environs were such that I could easily picture them. The story is told from several points of view, but Farra seems to be the main character until Vincent is brought into it. I was intrigued with Drycenian nation. They are most civilized, and are very technologically advanced compared to all the other worlds. Although, I'm not sure I approved of some of the technology used on Farra. However, I can see why they would do so, and she definitely needed the improvements to aid her mission! The King and the Prince appear to be kind and gentle, but they can be dangerous if provoked. I wouldn't want to get on their bad side!
There is a prophecy to fulfill and danger in the form of the Transmortal Army. These are a rather nasty bunch of people but, in their own way, they are pawns in a mad man's vendetta. There are plenty of twists and turns that surprised me, but there was a big one that I certainly didn't see coming! I am now looking forward to reading the next book, The Sleeping.
Merita King has written a fantastic science fiction novel that is fast paced and flows beautifully. I am now a fan of hers!
Due to some gruesome violence, I do not recommend this book for younger readers, but I highly recommend this book if you love Science Fiction. - Lynn Worton
