French Phrasebook for Tourism, Friendship & Fun by Mathieu Herman and Robert F. Powers is a fresh, new look at providing basic French vocabulary and phrases for anyone interested in the language. Beginning with an explanation about how to use the book, this French Phrasebook is conveniently set up in alphabetical format with plenty of options for the most common expressions. Another excellent feature of the book is the separate food and beverage section so that anything related to a menu is easy to find. The individual appendices clearly present basic facts and information such as the alphabet and pronunciation, conversions for weight, measurement and temperature from the metric system, and the words and phrases related to telling time and identifying dates. The simple grammar explanations help to understand ‘why’ things are said a certain way and provide a starting point for more in-depth study of the language.
Unlike a regular dictionary, the French Phrasebook for Tourism, Friendship & Fun provides a wide range of language choices that are the most useful for situations encountered by travellers. This eliminates the need to sort through unnecessary options or pages of technical terms so that you can quickly converse with native speakers while traveling. This easy to use format is less cumbersome than traditional phrase books or dictionaries and can be accessed anywhere. In my various travels I've used a good number of phrasebooks, mostly Lonley Planet and Langenscheidts, but this one is hands down the best I've ever had. So much so that I've shaken off my lethargy to write this review - something I don't normally do. What I really found useful about this phrasebook was the ability it gave me to carry on simple conversations with fellow passengers and acquaintances. My previous two French classes helped somewhat, but the phrasebook really filled the gaps. I like the dictionary system used in the phrasebook to find phrases. It's much quicker than looking through a bunch of categories. A nice plus for me, and a surprising one, was the all the vocabulary related to skiing. A lot of other sports seemed to be well covered, as well (I saw a lot of mountain climbing words), but were not of interest to me. All in all, this is an exceptional phrasebook and one that I would heartily recommend.

I have used a lot of phrasebooks in my travels, but never one even half as good as this one-in any
language. What an incredible compilation of words and phrases on everything under the sun.
And it's so easy to find things. The French pronunciation is put very clearly, so I was able to make
myself understood almost all the time. I highly recommend it.
