Another Great Story
I don't normally give reviews, but I just want to say that I thought this was a fantastic story and very well written. While I don't want to give the story away, I will say the interaction between Dick and Jonathan was well written regarding the trials and problems dealing with severe head trauma and being a caretaker for someone with a brain injury. I hope other readers will take a chance on this story and enjoy it as much as I did.
Dorien Grey is an author you would read weekly!
Dorien just gets better and better. His characters are amazingly real, they exist in your imagination as if their pictures appeared in the book. Love reading both of Dorien's series, only wish he had written 10 times the number of books he now has in print.
Another great read in a very satisfying series
One of the many things I admire so much about the Hardesty series is its pace. Because it's set in the time it is, the reader has to enter it. Grey does such a great job of that -- appointments for next Tuesday, land line phone calls, a Rolodex, a crossword puzzle and coffee before work begins, I could go on. I mean, when was the last time a mailbox played a part in a mystery? That's powerful stuff.
When other authors are being urged to spike up the pace of their books to keep a reader's "interest" (immature attention span, imho), Grey defies the practice and dares him to slow down to enter what fits the time. He does it so well.
The mystery itself is seamlessly crafted (of course!), and the array of characters, too. I've always been in love with Jonathan. Dick, too, but I fell in love with Jonathan's generosity, his naked optimism and Puckish humor from the moment he showed up. Grey faces an interesting decision in what Jonathan’s character will be like in coming stories. This time I guessed the villain fairly early, and I can't help but feel Grey deliberately made that possible, because one source of tension in the story for me as a reader was knowing who it was and seeing events unfold as they did.
