Storm before the calm?
Voices by P. S. Winn is a suspense-filled novel centering on a small town community in West Virginia where the residents’ simple lives are convoluted by the presence of a slasher murdering vagrants along the outskirts of town. The incidents may or may not follow a trend, and Sheriff Jake Hamlin goes through the motions until the son of a wealthy business owner becomes the next victim. The author then brings us behind closed doors as we experience the tension-filled atmosphere in the lives of the average American when reality comes crashing in.
This is Winn’s most ambitious work yet, and we feel the heat as Hamlin’s pregnant wife Mary has a household accident that causes Jake even greater stress. He is also concerned about the new business deal between Lexington Steel and a local firm, Cook Construction. Brothers Phil and Brad are expecting Jake to restore normalcy to their small community, largely due to their relationship with the wayward Jamie. The family themes resonate through the plot as Jake tries to find the missing piece of the puzzle. This is a psychological thriller you won’t want to miss.

Voices is a gripping mix of suspense and romance. While withholding the identity of the culprit, P.S. Winn places the reader in that person’s head. Although the reader suspects the person’s identity, red herrings create uncertainty. It is also fun being inside the head of a good looking cop who is, nonetheless, uncomfortable in approaching his love interest. This is a must read for romance and mystery lovers.
