This book is an instance in which the whole community is mistaken in its apperception of reality, while an adolescent gets it right.

Everybody keeps wondering about this adolescent’s age; for, the way he speaks and behaves, he gives his parents, his friends, his relatives and his enemies, the impression to assume maturity and wisdom of all human generations. His mother, Micheline Morton, believes that, the way her “beloved” son carries himself, he either counts among the geniuses or he has sunk into madness. His father, Joseph Morton seems to have a simpler explanation: Marcel acts as a nuisance and may daily expose himself to dangers. His siblings and peers, having exhausted all possible explanation, stop trying to figure him out; the more so, since this young man takes no interest in their games and other activities appropriate to his age. As for Father Gregorio, God has always had a mysterious way to express Himself. Thus, because of Marcel’s precocious positive thinking, he has no other choice but to count him among the messengers of God. Everybody keeps guessing, but Marcel himself. Of course, he has awareness of his physical age: he is a fourteen-year-old boy. His physical appearance also shows his age. In his process of ageing he has conceived of, he firmly thinks that he has, in a way, acquired the age of his grandfather, a science teacher, who, unfortunately, died at the age of sixty. He believe so, not for a mysterious reason,, but because of their closeness, their daily intercourse allowing the adolescent to grasp his grandfather’s wisdom and objective-mindedness. Marcel seems beyond the bounds of ageing theorizing, when he confuses his age with older and older generations. On his grandfather’s advice, he finds out that most of what humanity, he may read it at the public library. Then, he turns a bookworm and thinks that he is as old as Confucius, that Chinese philosopher and teacher who lived between 1513-1583B.C. Again, Marcel reaches such conclusion because he manages to relate to that ancient thinker’s advice according to which, when the mob loves someone, you have to investigate such love; when the mob hates someone, you have to investigate such hatred. Thus, since a puzzling situation has been going on in Ouanaminthe for a long time, Marcel makes up in mind to decipher the mystery, if any. . This young boy may be an inspiration to many. We recommend the reading of this book to youngsters.

Excerpt

“The twists and turns of our beliefs shouldn't make us forget an existential reality: the common human needs.
“Our beliefs won’t appease the sufferings of the starving, the penniless, and the homeless«.
“Promises to help them in this world or in heaven won’t satisfy the needs for real foods, clothes, houses, health and education they yearn for.
“Our promises come from our beliefs above-mentioned, to such a par, even if they mean something for us, they leave the masses in filth. Anyway, these promises don’t materialize at all, for the moment, while people have urgent needs.
“Counselor Eliot, we need food every three or four hours. Many need something to eat every hour on the hour.
“We must wear clothes, shoes and so on, throughout the day.
“We need a place to rest ourselves and to have our own families.
“Once in a while, we get sick. We must see a doctor, stay in hospital and buy medications.
“We would like at least to read a newspaper, a novel…
“We must satisfy these needs immediately. Without this minimum of existence, we will lose our status as a person, will tumble down into to savagery, trying to find food in a anyway we can. We may often go as far as to kill or be killed to eat, drink and sleep.
“It’s a jungle.
“How can we reach happiness in a jungle, while we firmly believe that we have built civilization and that we have eliminated, par the same token, the risk of barbarism.
“Our beliefs should play the role of imagining power, but, they shouldn’t, at any price, get confused with the human common need. We should never starve others or make them suffer because of our beliefs.
