This E-book is one of the most valuable tools a travel writer could have in his or her toolbox. In fact, I wish I had a concise reference like this when I started out on my travel-writing journey. Having this instant list of more than 150 travel magazine leads would have accelerated my travel writing career by one or two years. Instead, it took me eight years and hundreds of hours to develop this list, item by item.
A large part of your success as a freelance writer depends on finding a good selection of magazines that are compatible with your story ideas. This is a time consuming business. Yet, just like putting fuel in your car’s gas tank, it must be done regularly for you to move ahead.
Unfortunately, for most travel writers, this task is their Achilles heel. Travel writers dislike the task of researching magazines because it’s so onerous and because many writers simply don’t know where to find good magazine leads.
One of the reasons why I sell so many of my travel articles is because I love hunting down and researching magazines to pitch my stories to. I actually think it’s fun! And I’m very good at it.
If you want to be a successful travel writer and get those nice press trips and Fam Tours, you need to be highly proficient at finding magazines to pitch your stories to. There’s no way around it unless you purchase a ready-made list like this one. And, as I have discovered, there’s an art to tracking down good travel magazines.

Using the Writer’s Guidelines
Your first step is to open up each of your target magazine’s websites and look up their Writer’s Guidelines. Although they go by different names (Contributor’s Guidelines, Submissions Guidelines, Write for Us, Tips for Writers, etc.) they’ll all tell you the same thing—what the editor is looking for (and just as importantly, not looking for) from freelancers.
Writer’s guidelines will usually tell you if you should query first, who to address your query to, what length they prefer their stories to be, and often what the theme of each issue in the following year will be. They will often comment on what style they like their articles to be written in, what format (font type, size), and how to submit them (email attachment, disk, mail).
Writer’s Guidelines should also tell you how much you could expect to be paid for your story. You’ll notice, after being published a few dozen times, that pay scales are all over the place—there is absolutely no standardization.
