You may not think this important, but when you write—you are more likely to be successful (in both process and results) if you write what is important to you. I specifically mean what you like as a reader. What do your passions lean towards? What are your favorite books? What have you read the most of? If you write what you love to read, the work is usually better, fresh…and as a reader, one is able to ‘feel’ your intent to a larger degree.
That’s why this guide had to meet my own personal expectations. As a reader, I wanted to see a few (meaning eight) points accomplished to have real value:
1) The guide had to be easy to use and encourage its use through the design. That means it had to look good =).
2) Provide a solid, creative manual with definitions using plain language. This is to help a wider age range of users. There are educated writers out there who may mock this work and my weak vocabulary, but that’s alright—I didn’t write this for them.
3) The guide needed to address common topics—but provide a unique perspective, backed by a set of easily accessible resources. There are a growing number of books about worldbuilding on the market—some of them quite good. What I wanted was something fun to read, encouraging and easy to follow. This would hopefully allow writers to take their skills to the next level if they so desired.
4) It had to be built around a step-by-step process…BUT, allow the writer to use the steps out-of-order. The intent was to provide a product that worked for both the linear thinker (not me) and the non-linear thinker (me, me, me).
5) Provide templates for the writer to use until (and if) they decided to make their own. Templates for developing characters, animals, plant life and more.
6) Present the product in a journal format. It had to be something you would write in—which meant it also had to be larger—such as a 8.5 x 11 format, rather than a 6 x 9 (or smaller) dimensions. At the same time—there had to be a digital version for the growing use of eReaders, which meant an alternative way to provide the templates mentioned above.
7) The design margins should be custom as well—so the spine could eventually be removed, the pages punched with holes…and the contents placed in a 3-Ring binder. It didn’t have to be used that way, but I wanted that kind of an option to allow for expansion. This would also allow for complete customization—grouping the front content together as reference materials, while the content created (by the writer) could be grouped and organized to make their own individual book.
8) Extra copies of each form in the back of the guide, which could be cut out and copied when needed. The writer can then add to their notes and world building any time they like, without having to buy another book from me.
This may sound like a lot, but if all these contents are in a guide, I would personally find value in it. So these are the things this guide attempts to provide.
