Dan takes the stance of `I wish I were a Chameleon' to construct us on the various types and lifestyles of chameleons. Some of the facts he shares are various photographs (always a Dan Jackson trademark) include the fact that chameleons live from 5 - 9 years and that they can be readily eaten by predators IF they can be spotted, that they can range ins size form 0.6 to so inches, male chameleons often have bug noses and head crests, that there are 160 species of chameleons on Africa, Europe and Asia (59 species live in Madagascar! With most of them in Yemen, Saudi Arabia, Spain and India - and some in California, Hawaii and Florida), that chameleons don't change color to hide but to communicate with other chameleons, that their outer skin contain many pigments, and that if for any reason the chameleon want to blend into the background they can do that in 20 seconds. They can move their eyes separately, lay as many as 1 to 100 eggs at a time and bury them for protection, they can climb trees with special feet, bask in the sun, and they don't have ears but can hear very quiet sounds like the vibrations of an insects wings, that they can catch food with their long quick tongues, and more and more amazing facts.

What this book does so beautifully is introduce the many aspects of chameleons that are fun and beneficial and allows children to get to know animals from an animal's point of view. The photographs are absolutely splendid in this book - but then the whole book is a winner! There seems to be no end to the knowledge and ingenuity of Dan Jackson
