The need to bridge the gap between Eastern and Western solutions to global problems is huge. This book fills that gap. By using the philosophy, values, and writings of Japanese peace activist Daisaku Ikeda, this book addresses how Eastern and Western value structures and political solutions can be realized with regard to ending wars, dealing with UN reform, the challenge of climate change and global warming, transforming the consciousness of individuals so as to make possible a dialogue between peoples and cultures that will create the foundation for global citizenship and a more cosmopolitan worldview that advances global peace.
At the beginning of the 21st century, all of humanity faces a set of commonly shared crises. These range from climate change and global warming, to the persistent problems of war, conflict, environmental degradation, the need for the abolition of nuclear weapons and for reform of the United Nations. Each of these themes and issues has been addressed, from an Eastern-Buddhist perspective by the Japanese philosopher Daisaku Ikeda. In this book, his views are compared and contrasted with Western approaches---thereby creating a dialogue between peoples and cultures. This book shows that there are many points of convergence between Ikeda and his contemporaries in the task of building a new world civilization dedicated to peace. The three central components that are discussed in reference to Ikeda are his emphasis on inner-transformation, dialogue, and global citizenship. By advancing these components together, it becomes possible to contemplate the development of a world that has moved beyond crisis after crisis.
