In 1609, Salt was a scruffy, white alley cat looking for a new life. When he hears that the Sea Venture is sailing to the New World, he knows this is his chance. Life on the Sea Venture is full of fun and excitement, even though Salt has to deal with the aristocratic Angoras, the exclusive Feline Guild, and the territorial ship’s cats. But then a huge Tempest threatens to sink the ship.
The passengers labor for days to keep the ship afloat and Salt expects the ship to sink at any moment. Luckily they wreck off the island of Bermuda. The island holds many new adventures, but Salt is determined to get to the New World, so when the humans build two more boats, he joins them. They make it to the New World, but find a horror there that none of them expected.

Salt raced down the alley as if the devil himself was after him, instead of kindly William Shakespeare. He had to find a way to get on board the Sea Venture before she set sail. He leapt over a barrel without breaking stride. Darting between a man’s legs, he jumped onto a wobbly stack of crates. Then he vaulted onto a nearby awning. Here came Mr. Strachey with a canvas bag slung over his shoulder.
Salt pounced light as a feather onto the bag. He wiggled his way in and curled up beneath the clothes. Mr. Strachey took a quick look inside but did not seem to notice the small white cat tucked beneath his shirts. He slung the bag over his shoulder and headed for the Woolwich dock.
Salt poked his head out for one last look at London. There was poor Mr. Shakespeare, wringing his hat in despair at losing sight of Salt. The cat felt a moment of regret at leaving the kindly playwright behind. Salt was a rambling cat. He couldn’t stay cooped up in a dusty theater, when there was a New World waiting for him. Sure, the theater was fine between voyages, but Salt longed for adventure. When he heard Mr. Strachey say he was taking passage on the Sea Venture, Salt decided he would too.
