This is a really engaging book full of fun facts, wonderful photos (in color and black and white) from some of the most popular movies and shows involving horses. Lodge offers a fascinating look into the special effects used in filming and production, explaining how tricks and stunts are pulled off, and how the AHA stepped up to protect horses in film. It also covers a vast array of interesting facts about some of the most famous horses from movies and tv, with a trivia section at the end of the book to either test your own knowledge, or enjoy with a horse-loving friend.

Just a few topics covered in this book include wild horses and film, horses and comedy, the history and influence of the western, as well as useful websites where you can view film clips and more for free.

Horse and Pony Colours: Which would you choose?
This book captivated me - literally, since I meant to just glance at it and read it later, but ended up reading from start to finish. The strong, beautiful images played a large part.

I love horses and have long been interested in coat colourations. In Ireland we did not have Appaloosas when I was growing up, but I read Fabulous by Dorothy Benedict, part of a three-book series which I later acquired in full. This series includes Appaloosas, black, palomino, paint, zebra dun coloured horses. Now with DNA testing as this e-book explains, it is possible to test horses to see what genes and factors they carry and which are being expressed or dominant, and not expressed or recessive.

While Lesley Lodge stresses that colour is secondary compared to choosing the right size, breed and temperament for your needs, she then looks at some fine examples of horses. The two main coat colours are black and red, with other colours being dilute forms. The skin can also be pink or black. Then there are markings such as blaze, star and sock, as well as the gaudier Appaloosa or paint markings.

Mainly the book focuses on horses of the film world, as these bring handsome horses to the viewer and the British-based author is involved in the film scene. The well-known horses include Trigger, the Black Stallion, Shadowfax and Tornado. She doesn't mention that Tom Mix rode a handsome pinto called Tony. However pintos get their star in Hidalgo. She also left out 'Into The West' shot in Ireland, in which seven grey horses were employed to portray Tir na nOg.

The target audience seems to be young adults. If you love horses you will love this and you may learn something too because our knowledge is expanding at a fantastic rate.

Because it is Written
Being able to write short fiction and place it into a historical context is, it seems to me, a very special skill which Ms Lodge has in abundance. Because it is Written shows a keen appreciation for the language and the time when women could be branded as witches and drowned. In contrast Hoodies is set in a modern day inner city context in which you could loose your life just by looking the wrong way. These two stories balanced in such a way show the scope and depth of Lesley Lodge's narrative skills. Well worth reading!
