Leigh ran as fast, as hard as she could. She didn’t know how long but the sun set long ago, leaving darkness behind. It felt like a lifetime since she’d freed herself and, hoping help was nearby, rushed into the humid night air only to see a dirt road and dense forest of trees that rose to the sky.
Her heart pounded fast and hard. Her lungs burned for air. Her legs felt wobbly, like her bones were going soft. Roots and branches clutched at her feet and ankles. She stumbled as exhaustion wore her down. She slowed to a staggering walk, determined to continue and get as far from the cabin as possible.
If the phone call hadn’t come, he’d have cut her to shreds. Ironic, she thought, how a ringing phone – the one thing she despised – may have saved her life. She wasn’t sure how long he held her captive – days, at least. She only knew he meant to kill her and in a vicious, brutal manner. Before the fortuitous call, he poised the scalpel beneath her left breast. She felt the pressure growing with each second. Then the phone rang and after a goodly amount of fussing, he unlocked the shackles and hauled her back to that horrible dust rag serving as a mattress.
She told herself not to think about it anymore. Focus on finding help. But the longer she plodded onward, the likelihood of that diminished like hope had for days. She didn’t know the forest. Even if she had, in the dark of night, under the thick canopy of the trees, there was no moon, no constellations to guide her. She just focused on moving forward in a straight line, terrified of accidentally circling back to that place.
When the heat of exertion and the numbness of fear abandoned her, a chill crept up her bare skin. Shivering uncontrollably, she trudged forward as long as she could, stumbling in the dark as she tripped over uneven ground. After what seemed like hours she stopped, aching to rest and hoping that in the dark she couldn’t be tracked. He’d be back soon, if he wasn’t already there. She needed to put miles between them but her body refused to accept the fact. It wanted rest, food, most of all peace…
Her foot caught on a fallen branch and she tumbled down a sloping hill. She rolled over and over, trapping a frightened scream behind her lips. Praying no one heard the scuffle of dry leaves and snapping of twigs as she fell, Leigh quietly climbed the hill, careful to listen for any noise or movement. He might be waiting for her, to ambush her, just to drag her back and finish what he started.
At the top of the rise, she panicked. Which direction had she come from? She circled around, desperate for signs of her own tracks but the forest floor, covered in a thick carpet of pine straw, branches and pine cones, revealed no sign of her footprints. Standing there, trying to decide what to do, she grew more terrified she’d hear a twig snap in the distance, or see some movement, then see him emerge from the shadows.
