MATTHEW: Was it difficult for you? Realizing your feelings for me?
TRAVIS: What do you mean?
MATTHEW: I just mean, you said you pushed all of those feelings aside. You got married. What are you? Gay? Bisexual?
TRAVIS: (stops) I don’t think I’m either of those. I’m in love with you. That’s it.
MATTHEW: (chuckles) I hate to break it to you, but that kind of makes you one of them.
TRAVIS: No. I fell in love with you. The person. Not because you’re a… you know.
MATTHEW: You’re not… attracted to me?
TRAVIS: God, yes! You’re beautiful and amazing. It’s taking everything in me right now to stay a gentleman.
MATTHEW: That means you’re attracted to a man.
TRAVIS: I am attracted to you. That’s it. I’ve never found another man attractive.
MATTHEW: Well, then… (rolls his eyes.)
TRAVIS: I’m serious.
MATTHEW: Maybe you just haven’t thought about it.
TRAVIS: Fine. If it means that much to you… I’m bisexual. There. I said it. Happy?
MATTHEW: I’m sorry.
TRAVIS: It’s fine.
MATTHEW: (crosses to the bed, grabs his coat.) You’re right. This isn’t going to work.
TRAVIS: (runs to him) Wait. What?
MATTHEW: If you can’t admit it to yourself, how the hell are you going to look at yourself in the mirror tomorrow morning?
TRAVIS: I just said it. I admit it.
MATTHEW: You said it to appease me. That isn’t the same thing.
TRAVIS: It’s no big deal!
MATTHEW: Maybe not now, but it will be. Trust me. (turns to leave.)
TRAVIS: (stops him) No! Don’t go! I’m sorry. I just… I’m not ready for that. All I know is I want to be with you.
MATTHEW: Well perhaps you and I had different ideas about what was going to happen here. (reaches for the door) I guarantee mine were pretty gay.
TRAVIS: You’re right.
MATTHEW: About what?
TRAVIS: I have to face it. I will. You can help me. Please?
MATTHEW: Shit. (turns, takes off his coat)
TRAVIS: I have thought about it, but… you know. There’s so much negativity about it. I hate labels. They’re just there to pigeonhole you.
MATTHEW: There is a huge difference between orientation and stereotypes.
TRAVIS: In my head, I know that, but other people don’t seem to get that.
MATTHEW: You’re worried about what others will think of you.
TRAVIS: (pause) Yeah.
MATTHEW: It’s not going to help, but first of all it doesn’t matter fuck all what anyone else thinks of you. Secondly, I think you’re real issue is the stereotypes. You’re afraid that if you identify with either term you have to live up to them.
TRAVIS: Yes. Stupid, isn’t it?
MATTHEW: (embraces TRAVIS) You don’t think I went through that? You don’t think most of us go through that?
TRAVIS: Then why is it so difficult to just accept that part of yourself?
MATTHEW: Because no one offered it as an acceptable alternative. We were given one option. To be a red blooded, beer can smashing, nut scratching heterosexual. If we couldn’t live up to that then there was something completely wrong with us.
TRAVIS: (sits on the edge of the bed) You’re right. You should go. You don’t need this.
