From the story: Melungeons - People of Mystery
No one has solved the puzzle of how English speaking people, who practiced Christianity, got to the Smoky Mountains in Tennessee, before the earliest explorers in the recorded history of the United States.
But it is a fact that when the explorers pushed into the Appalachians in the 17th century, they discovered this group of people who had English surnames, spoke Elizabethan English dialect with a mountain cadence.
Scientific research is being conducted to solve this mystery.
