A modern day, street wise adventure of two friends, Martin, a brilliant but aging thoracic surgeon, and Aaron, with so much money and investments he qualifies for the ' wheeler-dealer par excellence' title Martin confers on him. The hospital where Martin works has been taken over by a conglomerate, and Aaron's greedy daughter-in-law, Blanche, is trying to wrest control of his financial empire from him. They meet at and escape from a care facility together to share and handle both their problems and adventures.
Martin, and Aaron have the money and the know-how to help handle the problems they run across. They manage to do hip replacements, needed health care for Leona's patients at her volunteer job, get a molester of children off the street and use him for a blood donor, survive a gang war, and elope to Las Vegas for a double weddng in their quest to recycle humanity. They do a lot of good unhampered by red tape using their considerable talents and money while keeping a low profile as Blanche, the daughter-in-law from hell hunts as he says "for my ass and my assets!" Every patient they help is an adventure as well as a benefit - will their good luck hold? Will Blanche find Aaron? Will Martin be able to continue his medical career? Martin and Aaron happily 'recycle humanity' as it crosses their paths fighting retirement, Blanche, and the conglomerate and take us and our funnyi-bones along with them. Martn and Aaron escape from a care facility and arrive at Aaron's friend Leona's door with the announcement, "We're running away from home together, Leona. The Old Folks Home!" They begin helping the patients where Leona does volunteer work. This turns out to be so satisfying they toss out all rules except Martin's oath and the ten commandments. Aaron schemes to outwit Blanche and Martin plots revenge against the conglomerate between adventures.

Recycling Humanity is a good candidate for anyone's must read list. It is timely, with well rounded characters whom you can sympathize and identify with. It takes us from the sometimes not too ethical struggle on the higher corporate levels to a gang war and explores some of the ways we might help each other by volunteering. It is entertaining and gives us a few chuckles on the way. We are proud to have Jackie Griffey's weekly column and look forward to reading more of her novels.
