Excerpt
Introduction
Every month, roughly five thousand fitness-related books are released on Amazon alone. Among them are a staggering number of titles that offer quick weight loss methods and promise guaranteed results. But is it too good to be true? Have all these authors really found the magic solution to getting fit or are they simply cashing in with their personal twists on the latest dieting trends?
After looking into the contents of some of these recent releases, I became convinced of one thing: the fitness market is saturated with countless dieting and workout books, many of which contain nothing but poorly explained and unreasonable crash diets or training programs.
Readers of those books are often expected to brute force their way into a completely different lifestyle at a moment's notice, without any real preparation or use of a gradual progression plan. And what's worse, many of the methods suggested to the readers have little to no evidence to support their effectiveness. People are simply expected to take the authors' word on whatever claims they make.
To me, that does not sound like the proper way to help people.
You will not find any diet plans or training programs in this book. My goal is to get you started with the easy, everyday stuff first and to complement your existing fitness practices, not just throw you into the deep end and then shove another all-new "diet/training system" down your throat.
In my experience, which is supported by research, even when people try their best to make big lifestyle changes stick, very few ever succeed at doing so. The numbers are actually quite bleak:
Research has shown that on average, 81% of people fail at fulfilling their New Year's resolutions [usually because of too many or too difficult changes to their lifestyle] (1)
Similarly, surveys done into the success rates of more traditional weight loss methods have concluded that only about 20% of people manage to achieve long-term success. (2)
I believe that we can do better than that.
The information in this book will teach you about numerous, yet often overlooked and undervalued fitness concepts, habits, and behavior tricks, all of which will fill in the gaps left by more traditional fitness books and programs.
It's the small things that end up making the biggest impacts!
But you won't have to take my word for it.
In addition to my personal experiences and studies, which have taken me from being an overweight teenager to a national champion in the IFBB's (International Federation of Bodybuilding and Fitness) member league, the content of this book is also backed by scientific research when applicable and will contain links to specific studies for additional proof.
I have tried my best to exclude any scientific jargon so that no scientific background is needed to understand the material in this book.
You will also discover my fondness for quoting great minds and successful people. People like James Clear, an entrepreneur and writer, who said:
"What if losing 50 pounds wasn’t dependent on a researcher discovering the perfect diet or you finding a superhuman dose of willpower, but hinged on a series of tiny habits that you could always control?“
What if indeed....
Still skeptical? I wouldn't blame you if you were. Skepticism is well founded in this context. After all, there aren't supposed to be any shortcuts to getting in shape nor any substitutes for hard work.
And all that is still true. Proper diet and training are still the most effective means of sculpting your body. But I am also aware that such big lifestyle changes are not for everyone and that long-term success is determined by more than just hardcore discipline and effort.
There are numerous habits and specific behaviors that can help you become healthier and more fit, even without the heavy strain of dieting and exercising. These concepts are not intended to be all-exclusive alternatives to regular dieting and training methods; but rather, helpful stepping-stones to larger scale changes. They help you develop a supportive infrastructure that complements the more serious and direct fitness practices you may already be involved in.
No matter whether you are a complete beginner or an advanced trainee, you will find something useful in this book.
But before we advance to the main content, here's some more information you will find useful:
The book consists of four parts, each containing several chapters that deal with different topics relating to the main theme of that part. The chapters of the book are written in a logical order in which the contents can be applied, though individual chapters can be considered stand-alone. Occasionally, a chapter will make allusions to previous pages if I felt the material needed additional clarification.
The various methods that are discussed are best applied selectively per your individual needs. After reading the contents, you should be able to discover the specific shortcomings in your daily life and compliment them with the suitable behaviors suggested by the book. But keep in mind:
On average, we cannot alter or add more than a few tiny habits at a time. (3)
There is no need rush and overextend yourself. Start slow, one step at a time.
Occasionally, you will see sentences followed by numbers in parenthesis () - like the one you see above. These numbers refer to the various sources that support the claims presented in the text. The full reference list with links can be found at the end of the book. Reading the source material is not necessary to understand or apply the material of the book, it is simply meant to offer proof and further reading for those interested.
And that's it for the introduction!
Happy reading!
