“As entertaining as this is, Princess. The debate is over.” Steven stopped in front of a giant painting of a landscape standing at least seven feet tall. “This is our door.”
“This is a door?” Her head pivoted from him to the painting several times. Then she studied the painting. It depicted a grove, lit with two moons peeking through the branches. Branches full of fat leaves, at least ten times as thick as any leaf she’d ever seen. At a casual glance, a viewer might assume it a mere painting of any number of groves in the world. A closer inspection told the truth. This painting was a peek into her home world. This serene night time scene was her first glimpse of Valedrun.
“Up you go.” He gestured to the gilded frame resting on the dirty cement floor. She understood he wanted her to step up onto the frame but stood frozen staring at the painting. Valedrun held a magical allure unlike any place she’d ever seen. Despite her misgivings, she fell in love with the land as she gazed into the painting. Still, she didn’t want to take the plunge and leave her life here.
She shook her head, slow this time to avoid the waves of dizziness the action brought the previous time. “No, please.” She whispered.
“Oh, for pity’s sake,” Steven grumbled and gave her a rough shove propelling her into the painting.
She squeezed her eyes shut unsure of what to expect. For a brief second she felt the sensation of the canvas slide over her skin. It stretched under her weight then issued a loud tearing sound before she tumbled to the ground. With her hands bound she couldn’t brace herself or catch her fall. Her single option in that split second of decision before hitting the ground was to turn her body so she’d land on her side rather than her face. Her chin still hadn’t healed from the altercation in her hometown and she didn’t care to worsen the injury. The grass offered a softer landing than the floor of the building she’d just left, but the fall jarred every sore spot in her body none the less.
