Reine is convinced she shouldn't love her stepmother, she doesn't realize there is room in her heart to love a multitude of people other than her father.
Not everyone is happy when Reinne’s father remarries, especially not the twelve-year old. She would much rather have things as they were before. But Reinne’s best friend teaches her a lesson about love that changes her mind about her new stepmother and stepsister, and about a mother’s love, whether a natural mother’s love or that of a stepmother. She also learns the hard lessons of acceptance.
Excerpt
Reinne dipped her fingers into the bowl of salad dressing and licked it off, “Mmmmmm, Ranch, my favorite,” she said, attempting to dredge her fingers in for a second time, but she was cut short by Christina.
“Reinne, no one wants to eat after someone else’s fingers, honey. Put a little dressing into a bowl if you want to sample it.” She handed her a spoon and a dessert dish to use for a scoop of dressing.
“There are some baby carrots and broccoli that are already cut up on the platter, along with some cucumber spears for dredging into the dressing on your dish if you’d like.” Christina smiled and nodded toward the platter at the end of the counter before she turned back to the task of turning chicken that was frying in a skillet on the stove.
Reinne ignored the spoon and dish in her hands. She dredged her fingers into the dressing again before she put the spoon and dish on the counter and turned to bound back up the stairs.
Christina only shook her head with a defeated half-smile. There was no sense calling her back to scold her; that would only give Reinne the negative attention she was seeking. She would take the matter up with Reinne’s father David when he came home, and the two of them would have to have a talk with Reinne about her defiant attitude and actions later. Her bad attitude seemed to be developing into a chronic habit. She seemed to be acting out more each day. It was as though Reinne was always simmering and ready to erupt like a brooding volcano. It was time to talk to her about the problems that seemed to be getting worse with each day.
