It was a cool, cloudy day in early November, 1902, and the loud, high pitched whistle from the passenger train woke Alex Cooper from a deep sleep. It took him a moment to remember where he was and what he was doing on the train. Then he remembered; he was headed to Beaumont, Texas, in hopes of finding his past. The head injury he had sustained by the two bandits that shot him, and left him for dead, left his mind empty of the last thirty years of his life. All he knew now was what the people surrounding him had told him. He was married; he had one four month-old stepson, a fifteen month-old stepson and a mistress on an Indian reservation. He closed his eyes and tried to remember what he could and the last three months were clearly visible to him. Other than that, he had no memory.
