This historical novel recounts the last 20 years of Chief Sitting Bull's life and activities as told by his war horse, Blackie.

"ME and CHIEF (Sitting Bull)" is based on true historical events, and covers the years 1870 -1890. During these years as Chief and Holy Man of the Lakota Sioux, Sitting Bull fought for, advised, counseled and re- presented his people, trying to enable them to live free on the northern plains as they had always done, all while the government declared them “hostiles” and sent military to round them up and contain them to living on designated reservations. Sitting Bull and Blackie were involved in the Battle on the Rosebud, present during Custer’s defeat, fled to Canada, surrendered to the U.S. military, took part in Buffalo Bill’s Wild West shows, and raised horses from his home on the Grand River in South Dakota until his untimely murder.

Excerpt

Warrior, Lakota Sioux chief and holy man to Indians; he was associated with the Battle of the Little Bighorn and member of Buffalo Bill Cody’s Wild West by whites, Sitting Bull portrays a lasting reminder of bravery, wisdom and kindness. He had many memorable events in his life: as a youth, receiving a white eagle feather for his first coup, his differences of opinion with Crazy Horse and Red Cloud about not trusting whites, their treaties, and their ever growing encroachment on Sioux land, his escape to Canada, and his return to live on a reservation.
Sitting Bull foretold his death—he dreamed that one of his own would kill him—and he was shot by Indian agency police in 1890, two weeks before the Indian massacre at Wounded Knee Creek.

Thumbs-Up for "ME and CHIEF"
"ME and CHIEF Sitting Bull" is a riveting, albeit sad, re-creation of the tragic final years of a Native American legend as well as the Great Lakota Nation, as told by a horse Sitting Bull owned—which made the perspective unique. There is also an underlying story of the Nokota horse breed which originated from Sitting Bull's horses, that, as a horse lover, I found interesting. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys reading historical novels.

ME and CHIEF
Well written story of Sitting Bull's final twenty years of life. Would recommend this for middle school scholars as a teaching tool for the true story of how the Lakota Indians were treated by the government
