From that moment, Matt McGregor’s life will never be the same. Upon awaking from cold sleep, Matt, co-captain of the space freighter, HC7 McGregor-15, discovers the ship has been abandoned and life support is failing. Once he gets the systems started, he finds out his brother and co-captain, Mike, has been captured by space pirates. Matt immediately sets out to rescue Mike, aided by the disembodied voices. He is reluctantly paired with Federation Lieutenant Tracy Warren. How will they find Mike and save him? Can they work together, despite their differences? Will they survive the rescue attempt? And who are those voices in Matt’s head?

“Wake up, Matt, wake up,” an insistent voice repeats in my head.
It’s cold, really cold. I try to force my eyes open. My lids won’t cooperate. Finally, my eyes focus on the frosted plastic dome above me. Shit, I’m still in cold sleep.
“Matt, you need to get the man-back running,” the voice pleads.
The man-back? Oh, manual backup system. Right. I try to raise my arms, but they’re heavy and dead.
“We’ll help you.”
I feel sensation rushing through my left arm. It moves. I push the handle, and the dome rises. A blast of warm air strikes my face and bare chest, bringing me fully awake.
I roll off the bed and land hard on the floor. The air is stale and smells faintly of disinfectant. Everything is dark, except for red and green control lights on the other sleep-bed panels. The room is empty. Where’s Mike? Where’s my brother? What’s going on?
My legs don’t work. I crawl toward the red-lighted switch on the console near the door, grab the wall-mounted handrail, and pull myself up. Then I flip open the safety cover and turn the emergency backup power system to manual-on before collapsing to the floor.

A Rollicking Jaunt
Larry K. Collin’s McGregor Chronicles 1 is a rollicking jaunt through space Starship Voyager-style. We accompany Captain Matt McGregor, cargo pilot on a search for his brother, Mike who has been abducted by intergalactic pirates. Matt attempts to penetrate the pirate’s base, subdue the black marketers and save his brother. McGregor’s journey is fraught with danger but he has advanced technology to disable the pirates’ electronic system, nano-medical robot implants which protect him from viruses and a spunky co-pilot, Lieutenant Tracy Warren to help him combat danger. Fans of Robert Heinlein’s Space Cadet or Isaac Asimov’s The Stars, Like Dust will enjoy this science adventure fiction. Collins presents space travel and intergalactic life in a straightforward and accessible way all will enjoy.
A nice sci-fi story
A very nice quick sci-fi story. It has a bit of action, a bit of romance, and a loyal family. The formatting is a bit annoying to me but that is a minor consideration. Looking forward to the next book.
