CHAPTER 7: Melt and Pour Mishaps

Melt and pour mishaps happen even after you’ve been crafting this type of soap for years. Sometimes it’s due to working with a new type or brand of soap base. For example, you’ll find that some bases melt faster than others. Other times you might be rattled because someone’s lurking nearby or you get distracted with a phone call. Being interrupted when making soap can change the outcome of your batch. Or you can have your soap cooling on a countertop and someone moves the mold not five minutes after you’ve poured it -- and there goes that batch. Maybe a pet jumps up on the counter when you’re in the middle of pouring or have just set out a mold of hot liquid soap. Those things have all happened to me and many other soap crafters. Optimal soaping conditions vary for everyone. Many can navigate a busy kitchen/work area, others need to be alone and have silence. You know what works best for you. Barring interruptions of all varieties, here are some melt and pour mishaps to avoid.

* Not all silicone molds are created equal. Some are flimsy and cost less but won’t last as long as a sturdier and thicker silicone mold. While they work nicely for melt and pour soap, they might not last as long if you’re using the hand-milled/rebatch type of soap base. The difference between rebatch and melt and pour soap is noteworthy when it comes to molds. Rebatch soap can be like wet sand and is packed into the mold. Melt and pour is as simple as pouring Jell-O.
