Puffy strays and something happens to make him decide he will never run away again. Judged "Outstanding" at the 2013 Writers Digest SPB Awards. Named among the best in family-friendly media, products and services 2019 by the Mom’s Choice Awards®.
Puffy is a small kitten who wanders away, then learns a very important lesson about running away. All's well that ends well though, and children are already looking for a sequel. In addition to sending an important message this book promises a fun way to learn words that encourage a rich vocabulary. The comforting ending when Mom or Dad read this book at bedtime even helps to drift easily off to dreamland!
Excerpt
Puffy is an amazing cat,
Who went off hunting for a rat.
He poked his head into a hole,
But all that came up was a mole.
So off he scampered into the woods,
To rest beneath some mushroom hoods.
He purred and play till on the scene
Came a small whiskered "kitty"
With odor obscene.
No one ever told Puffy, you better beware,
Of a "kitten" whose odor
Will mess up your hair.
Even worse was the bath that was bound
To ensue when his owner would bathe him With yucky shampoo.
Professional Reviews Writers Digest Judge's Review
Nicely illustrated; Puffy’s appealingly drawn with great expressions; the bold, big kid-friendly look will delight readers. The coloring pages are nice.
The story is short, sweet and moves quickly; the underlined rhyming words will help parents/teachers teach kids about rhyme. The helping children to learn list is nice and will be appreciated by parents/home schoolers.
There’s nice phrasings, particularly the kitty with the odor obscene; most readers will guess what that means, and will laugh with delight when proven correct.
The yucky shampoo is also nicely done. The whole cat meets skunk episode will be familiar to anyone in a suburban/rural area who owns cats.
Lots of fun, clever verse, and a nice look at a realistic (but unfortunate) cat.
A plus: the rhyme scheme holds up wonderfully; too many picture books have forced rhyme or uneven rhythm, so one that’s practically perfect will catch the attention of editors.
