The superstars in this book almost had it all--MVP trophies in the NFL, NBA, and MLB, records, league championships. They had almost everything--everything but the ring that comes with winning the big game or championship.
The Super Bowl, the World Series, the NBA Finals, Wimbledon. Dan Marino, Elgin Baylor, Ted Willaims, Karl Malone, Ivan Lendl and more--these greats and more never won the big one. They won conference or league championships, were the MVP's of their sport, set records and will be remembered in sports forever by many for their play.
Still, something was missing from their resume. A quarterback set numerous records for passing. A running back set the all time record for rushing in a season. One player was considered the "best pure hitter in baseball." Another hit more than 600 home runs. One player averaged almost 40 points a season one year in the NBA. Another was considered the best ball handler ever. Despite all their accomplishments these and other great players had something missing from their resume.

It's no wonder Ted Williams turned to baseball. With a father who worked long hours as a photographer and United States Marshall and a mother who spent many hours away from him, while working for the Salvation Army and protesting the evils of alcohol, Ted and brother, Danny, often had to sit alone outside their house until 10 p.m.at night before their parents let them in the family home.
It's not surprising he would look for refuge somewhere. For Ted Williams, the refuge proved to be baseball, which may have seemed natural. His uncle played semi-pro.
