Book #4, Simon & Elizabeth:Simon Maldon is sent to Scotland by the queen. While he battles Scottish outlaws, his son and wife must catch a vicious killer.

Shortly after learning his brother-inlaw, Will Clark, was murdered, Simon Maldon is called into Queen Elizabeth’s presence. Trusting her old friend’s judgment, the queen wants Simon to go with her delegation to Scotland and make an objective assessment of the character of Mary, Queen of Scots. Despite his pleas of family concerns, Elizabeth insists he must go. Reluctantly, Simon obeys his monarch’s command. After Simon sails for Scotland, his son Henry, wife Hannah, and old friend Calkin delve into the mystery of Will Clark’s murder. They soon face a killer determined to hide his crimes and willing —even eager—to murder again to do so. In Scotland, Simon faces his own trials. An outlaw captures the Englishmen and threatens to kill them if they don’t abandon their mission. In order to thwart the outlaw’s grandiose scheme, Simon must escape a dungeon tower, rescue his companions, and lead them to Edinburgh with all possible speed. For a London apothecary with no knowledge of the wild countryside,
Scotland itself is part of the problem. Will the rough folk of the Marches help, or will they turn their backs and let the Englishman make his way as best he can?

Terrific Addition to Historical Mystery Series
I love this series and I love this book. Most series do not progress in real time very rapidly. That is to say that most series books are only a few months apart between books. Peg Herring has chosen to advance the clock by about a decade. This book is intriguing because it has two (almost unrelated) mysteries running concurrently.. But it works, and works well. The series is still strong. If you liked the earlier installments, you'll like this one, I know I did. If you haven't yet read the earlier mysteries, it's not absolutely necessary, but as with most series, you'll get more out of the recurring characters if you are familiar with their back stories. And again, I can hardly wait for Ms Herring to write the next one for me to read.

Historical & Intriguing
n this fourth novel in the Elizabeth and Simon series, the now queen of England calls on her old trusted friend, Simon, to join an entourage to Scotland on an important mission. Simon is hesitant to leave his young family and his own mystery behind. Wait, a mystery? Although she has pressured Simon to leave, Elizabeth can't resist a mystery. Due to her station in life she cannot go out and investigate, so she charges her loyal guardsman and friend, Sargent Calkin, to take on the task for her. Meanwhile, Simon's assignment has developed into quite an adventure.
The author has done a brilliant job of developing and evolving the characters. The young people we met in, “Her Highness' First Murder” are now adults with lives that have taken them in different directions. Yet the bond of friendship remains.
Historical and intriguing, the series continues in royal fashion.
