Prologue
DR. MATTHEWS CARRIED THE NEWBORN BABY GIRL back to
her parents. The surgery was successful. He looked down lovingly at the Asian infant dozing happily in his hands—she reminded him of his own daughter. Doctor Matthews had removed the majority of the baby’s disfigurements. In the hospital room, her parents sat nervously waiting for the doctor.
“Hi Dr. Matthews. What is the news?” the father asked. He was a black-haired Vietnamese American and still dressed in his work clothes. His light blue shirt’s logo read “Blue’s Truck- ing” and there were grease stains all over his pants.
“Well, we were able to remove the extra limb.”
“That is good news,” the mother said, taking the baby from the doctor’s arms. She had long hair—black, like her hus- band’s—and brown eyes. She was sporting a big black bruise on her arm that her plum-colored dress didn’t fully cover. The doctor didn’t say anything about it. He knew it was not his place.
“I am really surprised we did not catch it earlier in the pregnancy.”
“Well, I am just glad little Avery is okay,” the father said in his broken English. He started to light a cigarette.
“Sir, really? In front of Avery?” the doctor asked him. Mat- thews did not approve of Mr. Tran. In fact the only reason he had performed the surgery was because the church gave him the cash for it. Also he had fallen in love with little Avery Tran as soon as met her. The Tran family was poor. Families similar to them typically could not afford Dr. Matthews’ services. The Catholic church next door to the hospital had sponsored the surgery for Avery.
“You’re right, I will do it outside,” the father replied. He strolled out of the room.
“I’m glad my daughter is not going to be a freak and can live a normal life now,” the mother said to the doctor. He stroked Avery’s head softly.
“Yes, I believe she will,” he replied.
Little Avery was still sleeping comfortably in her mother’s arms. The evil and sinister presence inside of Avery’s body boiled with anger. It was furious and ready for revenge.

The author, Mary Nguyen, creates a supernatural that audiences have not seen or existed. This supernatural is not vampires, werewolves, faeries, ghosts, witches, paranormal, psychic, or aliens. This antagonist is NEW.
The protagonist Avery Tran captures the essence and perspectives of a young and modern Southeast Asian American Vietnamese in suburban Dallas, Texas. Avery embarks on a personal journey fighting a supernatural all the while growing up and facing normal everyday challenges of a young millennial.
Avery tries to finds herself and her voice is in a diverse societal web of rural Texas, Vietnamese, Asian American, religious beliefs in Catholic values, college, siblings, abuse, and great conflict. This is a young adult story that crosses between Judy Bloom and R.L. Stine sprinkled with a bit of Fifty Shades of Gray.
Mary Nguyen stakes an audience market space in the publishing industry that is overlooked and missed by publishers. The perspectives of Avery Tran, although fictional, capture a collective cross cultural and diverse niche that is the young and modern Southern Asian American voices.

The deeper you go, the better it gets
The beginning of this book is chilling. I had to go back and check that it wasn’t listed as a horror story. Then I read on and discovered it was Avery having a nightmare.
Avery has had an imaginary friend, Venice, since she was a young girl. Now she’s a young woman, working with her mother in a nail salon, being a good girl and dreaming of something better. Venice still keeps coming around.
As their wills class, as Avery wishes Venice would just go away, Venice turns evil.
Just who is Venice? What does she want? What will she make Avery do next?
Avery must find answers and seeks the help of an old exorcist and a psychic. She fears her time is running out.
I was having such a good time, I read this from start to finish in less than a couple of hours.
It starts with a very creepy scene, then introduces you to Avery and Venice.
Avery is a dutiful daughter and never gets in trouble. Then Venice starts messing with her. She’s forced to do things she’d never consider doing. I felt for her. How do you fight something you don’t understand?
As for Venice, she’s bad to the bone. Such a wicked, malignant villain.
I’ve seen movies and read books with a similar plot and possession and evil entities always give me goose bumps. I know a book is good when I startle at strange noises and see things move out of the corner of my eye.
The Malevolent Twin creeped me out. And I loved that. It’s not easy to spook me anymore. I’ve seen too many scary movies and read too many scary books.
I didn’t know this was going to be a series when I started it. But after I read the end, I knew there had to be. It’s not a cliff hanger, more of a hint of things to come. Evil things. Bad things. I can’t wait.
