“By the gods! I fucking missed you!” Drawing back, he embraced Ylianor from under her armpits and set her back on her feet. “I can’t seem to find another woman quite like you, no matter how much I’ve looked for one.”
“I’m nothing special.” Reeling from the force of the orgasms, Ylianor had to hang on to Jeff to steady herself.
“No, you are.” Wrenching her arms, he gave her all the support she needed. “That’s why I wanted to talk to you right before the Fitting. To ask you to reconsider your decision to pledge to that odious Lord Templeton.”
“You did?” She frowned in mock concentration. “I didn’t know…”
Actually, she did. She distinctively remembered David telling her Jeff was looking for her, and her ardent plea to keep him away with any excuse possible.
“They were hectic times—”
“Which didn’t stop you from going through with it, anyway.” Frustrated, Jeff shook his head. “How could you? From all I hear of the Hall, he hasn’t changed his taste one bit.” With a finger under her chin, he tilted up her head. “Or his love, if that scene in the attic they told me about is true.”
“I never expected him to change anything.” Least of all his feelings.
“No, you don’t understand.” That he was getting unnerved was evident from the redness mounting in his face. “They were exclusive from the start. Duncan and Chris I mean. And I know, ‘cause I’ve known them from before their phase, which was unlike any other.”
His expression was a combination of envy and surprise that told Ylianor he had not gotten over it yet.
“Robin and I both had phases, but they were nothing like theirs…” Jeff frowned as though deep in memory. “No one could come between them, and you can ask Carl Strepton for confirmation.”
Yeah, good old Carl. No, she had not forgotten him, either.
“Carl tried separating them without success. They were as thick and tight as if they were one and understood each other even without words, like they had their own language or something. I’ve never seen anything like it, but it didn’t feel right then or much less now. Today that one is the leader and the other is pledged to you.”
No, Jeff just could not get it.
“And the leader reaffirming their love in such a public and dramatic way then nominating him as co-leader no less…makes me wonder where you fit in all this.”
“I’m as much a co-leader as Chris is, in case you haven’t heard.” It was time to set some of his records straight. “And if you’ve been keeping up with the Hall’s gossip, you must’ve also heard about his favoritism for me, of how taken he is by me to the point of privileging me over others, his phase mate included. And everyone makes fun of Chris saying it looks like the leader is more of my pledge mate than Chris himself.”
And no need to tell Jeff this was the honest truth, too.
“I have heard, yes.” He moved closer. “But I didn’t know whether to believe them. There are so many rumors, after all—like that David fellow becoming so important or Duncan pledging to Cecilia Hurst, the vice-leader herself.” His eyebrows rose. “Do you think he will?”
Never. “Could be.” No, no way. Her gut instinct, not to mention the lights she had caught whenever the two were together, told her there was little future for them in that department.
Cecilia’s future was with David. It was something Ylianor had glimpsed during the last days of her training course. Something had definitely shifted between them. A new closeness, perhaps. Something that attuned their lights like they had never been in the past. Ever.
“Well, even if it’s not her, Duncan needs to pledge.” Jeff made it sound final, like he was discussing a necessary treatment. “As a leader and as a Caldwell—”
“So one pledge in the family isn’t enough?” Ylianor teased.
