Margaret and Bill

Bill and Margaret bore three children fresh and dependable as themselves, and people admired them every Sunday as they worshipped together in church. Once their youngest child reached junior high, Margaret volunteered in the church office during the week and soon got a part-time job there.

Sometimes Bill complained dinner wasn’t ready on time and the house had a few dusty spots. Margaret tried to respond but new commitments soon prompted her to insist they hire a maid. Margaret needed time to take tennis lessons with neighbor Sally who said after sets they should occasionally stop for refreshments. Margaret declined at first. She hadn’t tasted alcohol in years but decided orange juice would be okay.

Bill often called home, asking the maid, “Where’s Margaret?”

“Don’t know, Sir,” she replied.

Bill concluded Margaret had conspired with the maid and hired a private investigator who reported his wife once left the tennis club with the handsome pro and Sally. The threesome rendezvoused with another young man at a chic bar, and three hours later Margaret left with Sally and drove home. The investigator recommended weekend surveillance.

Instead, Bill interrogated Margaret, who denied impropriety, and then he sped to the club and confronted the pro who politely explained nothing happened. Bill returned home and demanded Margaret quit her part-time job. She refused and asked if she was being tailed at church too. Bill said of course not. He nevertheless called the pastor, explained, and asked him to be alert.

Several weeks later the pastor called Bill and said, “I have news. Please meet me at our church.”

Margaret was already there.

“Good idea,” said Bill. “We need counseling.”

“You better get a lawyer,” Margaret
said. “I’ve developed strong feelings.”

“Bastard,” Bill shouted, lunging at the pastor, who palmed his forehead and ordered, “Settle down. My counsel can comfort you and Sally’s husband.”
