I brushed Dee's coat, the same chestnut color as my own hair, until it gleamed. Dee, whose official name was "Heart's Desire," was a beautiful mare. She belonged to Tyler Wilson, a senior at Morgan High School where I was a humble sophomore. Tyler lived just down the road from me. I'd known him since we were in grade school.
I pulled a burr out of Dee's mane and brushed the flowing mane into place. It wasn't really part of my job to groom Dee. But I loved doing it. When Tyler made the varsity baseball team, he'd hired me to help take care of Dee, since he had so little time after practice.
I had already cleaned out Dee's stall and bedded it with fresh straw. I'd pitched hay into the rack, measured out a supply of barley, and filled the trough with fresh water from the well. I could go home if I wanted to, but I didn't want to. I liked grooming Dee. It was the closest I could get to having my own horse. I'd given up hope that I might get one for my birthday, which was coming up. In the past, I'd always dreamed that I'd wake up on my birthday to find a horse in the back yard. But our yard wasn't big enough for a horse, and my parents couldn't afford the expense of boarding one.
The barn door banged open.
"Hey, Heather!" It was Tyler, his tall, broad-shouldered frame silhouetted in the doorway.
"Hi, Tyler. I, uh, was just getting a burr out of Dee's mane." My heart beat so I was sure Tyler could hear it. Recently I found myself feeling shy around him. He was another reason I was in no hurry to go home.
"I really appreciate the way you take such good care of Dee." Tyler patted Dee's neck, then held still as she nuzzled around the pockets of his jeans. He waited until Dee whinnied. "Here you go," he said, pulling a piece of carrot from his left pocket.
Dee munched her favorite snack.
"Well, I guess I'd better go." I hated to leave, but I knew Tyler was waiting to saddle Dee and take off for a ride on the trail through the woods in back of his house.
"See you tomorrow, Heather," Tyler said with a smile.
I left reluctantly, looking over my shoulder at Tyler and Dee. I wasn't sure who I envied more—Tyler, because he was with Dee, or Dee, because she was with Tyler.
As I crossed the road to turn into our driveway, a big white sign with red letters in the empty lot next door caught my eye: For Sale.
For Sale! I couldn't believe it. For years I'd dreamt of the lot being for sale and my parents buying it so I could have a horse. It was large enough that they could almost pay for it by renting it out for another horse or two—I was sure of that. I ran down the driveway, skidding to a stop at the back door of our house. I took a deep breath to collect myself. I had to look calm and rational when I presented my idea to my parents.
