When you're knight in shining armor swoops you off your feet and saves you from impending doom, your happy ending is near. But not everyone has a happy ending.

Contains mature content. Not suitable for anyone under 18 years of age.
Jodie Cornett’s heart holds many secrets. She’s never known life without the tragic burden that comes with love. Her world may be surrounded by shadows, but the light of her life is quite certainly the darkest of them all.
"You protect the ones you love." Her mantra carries her through her never-ending struggles—a haggard attempt to cope with, what is destined to be, her life.
When Flynn Taylor, a banker and Jodie’s personal superhero, rescues her, Jodie feels the future isn’t as bleak as she thought…but their son will change everything. Just when you think fate has relented from delivering more misery—think again--for destiny and fate will remind you that you are not in control.
Those who endure and suffer loss will clutch onto anything and all they see as good, even when it’s not the wisest decision...
This is Jodie’s story—from childhood to adulthood—and definitely not for the faint of heart.

Excerpt

Daylight was dwindling as the sun set in the sky. We were running out of time to look thoroughly and effectively. I signaled the officer to radio the others to check in. A sharp, shrill scream rang out into the air, silencing even the crickets. As a group, we found the person screaming and ran in her direction. The woman was on her knees in the mud, her hands covering her ears as she screamed over and over. My eyes scanned the area around her and caught sight of a small shoe peeking from under a bush.
"No," Lucy said beside me. "No."
We moved together toward the bush and Lucy saw her first. The soul shattering scream that came from beside me ripped my heart in two. She swayed, and then fell flat on her back into the mud. I couldn't even reach out to help soften her fall. My body was numb. My ears were ringing. As I stared at the small body lying feet from me, memories of the animals I buried what seemed like so long ago swamped my mind. They look the same. The cuts are the same. The placement is the same.
Then my world turned black as I heard another scream.

Professional Reviews

Shockey delivers on "shock"
Shockey has an eerie talent for writing stories that burrow beneath the skin. They are haunting and creepy, but in the best possible way.

Following the life of a young Jodie as she endures heartaches and tragedies, gives the reader a sense of familiarity. Shockey builds the story gradually, allowing the reader to become invested in the outcome.
Once the foundation has been laid, we are treated to a series of shocking events that take the story in a dreaded direction. Clinging to hope for the best, but fearing the worst, the story begins to manifest traits of horror. You have a sense of impending doom, but are driven to follow along with your heart in your throat. The ending will leave you gutted, shocked and troubled - which is exactly how a story in this genre should leave you feeling.

I have deliberately avoided re-telling the story, because the story is full of twists and turns that should remain unknown going into this book. Congratulations Courtney Shockey, for living up to your name and “shock”ing us with this tale of tantalizing terror of the heart.

What the H***
this book is sick, twisted, and demented and I like it! I don't know what the heck goes through Ms. Shockeys mind when she writes but I hope it keeps running in there. if your a fan of WTFs, you will love this book also.

If you are looking for twists and turns and OMG...
If you are looking for twists and turns and OMG moments, this is the story for you. You will ask yourself, what the hell is Courtney thinking.

Being a new author, she is going for the shock value and she gets it. I had the chance to read this early and was blown away.

Looking forward to the next book from this rising author.
