I was sitting in Real Life, a class designed to help students cope with the various pressures and crises of, well, "real" life, hoping to get up the nerve to ask Jacob Barr if I could borrow a pencil. Not that I needed a pencil …. I just wanted an excuse to talk to Jacob.
But every time I've opened my mouth to speak to him my throat has just frozen up. Why this class has analyzed marital adjustments, parenting, family crises and divorce while refusing to deal with How-To-Talk-To-A-Guy is beyond me. Of course, maybe the fact that we'd have all died of embarrassment should the topic have ever come up might have something to do with it.
I glanced over at Jacob one more time before forcing my attention once again to the front of the room where Katherine Walker and Tyler Hosier were doing a role-playing scene involving a couple working out a pre-nuptial agreement. I would've settled for a pre-date agreement with Jacob—day, time, place. I half listened to Katherine and Tyler while I doodled a large heart filled with several smaller hearts, which was safer than including any, you know, evidence such as initials. Finally the bell rang and Katherine was drawn to my side like an electromagnet.
"Well?" Katherine raised her eyebrows. With her jet black hair, Katherine was the sort of girl who stood out in a crowd. I, on the other hand, tend to blend into the supporting cast that far outnumbers the Katherines and Jacob Barr's of the world.
"No," I confessed. "I didn't speak to Jacob in class today."
"Hannah Hudson!" Katherine shook her finger at me. "It's only three weeks until the End-of-the-Month Dance and Jacob is still between girlfriends. I have it on good authority that he doesn't bite. What's it going to take for you to talk to him?"
I shrugged. "Maybe we could act it out in Real Live," I joked, trying to deflect some of Katherine's intensity.
"That's it!" Katherine's features became more animated than usual.
"Oh, sure," I said. "I'll just ask Mr. Robbins to set it up for the next class, and then you can send me to the home for the terminally humiliated."
"I didn't mean act it out in class." A conniving grin spread across Katherine's face. "Just use some of the role-playing techniques. As a trusted friend to play the part of Jacob. Then you can act out scenes starting with a casual conversation and work your way up to asking him to the End-of-the-Month Dance!"
I hesitated for about one second. What did I have to lose? "Okay, trusted friend." I said with a grin. "I accept your gracious offer."
"Not me." Katherine rolled her eyes. "You need to work with a guy."
"Oh, right. And just whom do you think I'd feel comfortable enough with to ask—"
Tyler Hosier rounded a corner, slammed into me and sent our books flying. As we knelt to retrieve our books he blushed through his freckles. "I-I'm sorry, Hannah," he stammered. "Are you all right?"
"I'm fine, Tyler. Don't worry—" Suddenly the dim bulb in my mind brightened. Tyler! We'd sat next to each other in practically every class since second grade, and as luck would have it, Mr. Daily had assigned us to perform the next role-playing scene in class, which meant we were destined to spend the next few days together anyway. "Hey, I'm glad I bumped into you," I said. "Uh, no pun intended."
"Oh?" Tyler scooped up his last book, then handed one of mine to me.
"Yeah, Could you stop by my house on the way home from school? I think we should go over our assignment and, um, a project I've been thinking about."
"Sure." Tyler smiled. He checked the time. "See you."
"Thanks," I said.
"Nice work," Katherine said.
"I thought so." Actually I'd almost forgotten Katherine in my excitement to implement the plan that would lead to a date with Jacob.
