This international thriller/contemporary fantasy is a nail-biting ride that is grisly but somewhat tongue-in-cheek, a brutal tale of horror and the occult that doesn't take itself too seriously. Jane and two male companions escape the horror, fleeing in a lifeboat. In their flight to escape Leon and his men, they become lost at sea for weeks, are out of water, and have nearly lost hope of ever finding rescue when they finally catch sight of land, a dangerous rain-forested island that seems deserted. However, their fight for survival has only just begun.

In spite of the cold, I was sweating. The blackness horrified me, with only a couple reference points to hold my sanity in place and keep from screaming.
As I stood there, a small gush reached my feet.
I reached out with my foot and found a hole in the floor. I explored the hole with my foot, but I couldn’t reach the other side of it. I lay down in the slime on my stomach with the chain extended as far as I could and felt with the toe of my boot. The opening was at least twenty-four inches across, but I also felt a grate over the opening, inches below the floor level.
Hope surged. This could be a way out!
I stood, trying to scrape the stink off my shirt and pants. As I did, a huge gush of water rocketed inside the room through the floor opening.
I reached down. The surge was draining away but not fast enough. I waited. The next surge came in and filled the floor higher.
The tide is coming in! Would it be high enough to drown me?
The thought of dying caused all the memories to suddenly flood back to me.
I could now remember it all, and terror seized me.
Oh, my god! They found me!

What a thrill ride! This book is very well written. The back story is very well done. The Phoenix are a team that write books that transport you to the world they create. "Leon's Lair" has the whole paranormal gamut of creatures. The story is about pirates who just happen to also be vampires or is it vampires that happen to also be pirates, lol. The vampire pirates have a nearly insatiable need for sex and blood. They prey on ships, including cruise ships, in order to kidnap young beautiful women to suck their blood as they rape them. Doing this gives them extraordinary powers such as mind reading and the ability to move quickly. They also increase the wealth they already have by selling valuables from aboard the ships. In this story, after looting a cruise ship and stealing several women aboard, they unknowingly allow the escape of Peter, Nick, Jane and another man in a lifeboat. After weeks lost at sea they just happen to land on the one island that is home to Leon and his pirates. The adventures and intrigues begin there with a roller coaster ride of thrills and intrigues. For me, one of the most poignant sentences in the book is, Jane - "Leon was a complex and complicated person. So filled with love for her, so filled with hope for the future, and so completely insane". This book doesn't disappoint at all!
Great Page Turner.
I really enjoyed this book. It was action packed, funny, scary and romantic all in one book. When you are watching a tv show and pick up the book during every commercial, you know you've got yourself a good read. This is truly a page turner. I also really loved the epilog that caught you up with every main character of the book. I will be telling my friends about this book.
Paranormal Thrill Ride!
If you are looking for an adventure in the palm of your hand this book is a MUST read. The Authors take you to a paradise beyond belief, where just under the surface there lies centuries of struggle between good and evil. This book truly has it all, Mystery, Paranormal, Romance, and just enough insanity to make your mind spin! Very well written, with many twist and turns. This book pulls in you and keeps you there, so much that you just can't put it down, you must know what happens to the characters next! This is one big emotional roller coaster. You will get very attached to the characters and feel their ups and downs, to the point I even had sympathy for the villain! I really hope they intend to have more adventures with these characters because I am just not ready to let them go!
