In the war between ancient powers and humanity, John is one of the most powerful weapons.

What are you, after everything you ever loved is taken away?

John Nomad once was a normal man, with a good job, loving wife, and beautiful daughter. A demonic creature took their lives, and destroyed everything that John cared about.

In the depths of his depression, a blind monk introduced him to a hidden world of power, of men and gods who use exotic powers to change the world around them. He showed John that a powerful group was behind his family's death, and were the real power behind every government and political power on earth.

John's depression turned to rage, and a determination to oppose the Unseen Masters, and to avenge his family. He became a part of the Resistance, and he discovered an ability to manipulate Shadow within himself. He became an important and and versatile part of the Resistance, called by gods and man The Hand of the World.

The enemy has been hiding behind the Kings of the world for thousands of years. We all sense this, and we feel powerless to stop them. Now they are preparing to come into the light, and enslave humanity until the end of time.

Will John and his fellow Resistance members be able to stop the Unseen Masters? Find out. Buy a copy of The Hand in Shadow.

Excerpt

Enki was a lot to take in. Now that John had muted the slaver push from Enki's mind, it was possible to be objective. Even without the mindless devotion to a living god, he was still impressive.
He showed his vast age in every move he made, and you could tell from his eye movements that he summed up situations at lightning speed. How someone his age could show such youthful élan was probably a question best left for another day.
"I guess that asking what the world was like when dinosaurs ruled the earth is not rhetorical with you," John quipped, while making sure that he did not step into another one of those bone-crushing handshakes.
"They didn't rule it, but when we first got here, some stragglers were still around," Enki replied. "Mostly little ones, but one of the big grazers would show up once in a while. The little ones made great barbeque."
"Okay, I do not know quite how to take that," John volunteered. "When did you first come here?"
"It was about forty-nine million years ago that we hit the Solar System," Enki answered. "We settled on Mars at first, but we visited Earth, and the other planets. We stayed on Mars for about twelve million years, until a faction decided to settle old scores with nukes," Enki said. "That broke down our magnetic field generators. It also reduced our habitable area so much that we decided to migrate to Earth."
John could feel the niggling thought commands of the giant Anunnaki to the household. John's power was fully protecting himself and the Monk from its influence. Knowing the nature of the creature before him, John was not surprised when one of the willing servants brought in drinks for them, in response to one of those thought commands.
John settled back into the comfortable chair and sipped his drink approvingly. It was about half Scotch whiskey, and half some bitter water, which was not quite the quinine flavor of tonic water. Surprisingly, it was a good combination.
"I would like to hear the whole story of how you got here, where your people came from, and what you have been doing all this time," John said. "What do you say that you keep the drinks coming, and tell us your story?"
"Refresh your drinks, and I will do that," Enki agreed. "It is a gripping tale, if I do say so myself."
Enki proceeded to tell the pair about the history of the Anunnaki. He told of how the first and only gods that the People had ever known had bioengineered the People from lesser primates some 1.1 billion years ago on their home planet. These unknowable and god-like beings, which tarried at the home world for a time, created and trained the People, before continuing on their mysterious errands among the stars.
They would send a single one of their planet sized vessels every fifty million years or so, possibly to see the progress that their creations had made. The Created were never sure what the purposes of the visits were, for the gods never explained themselves. Messages would appear upon obelisks that the gods had left them, if the gods wanted anything of the Created. What they asked for was as strange as was everything else about them.
The Anunakki, who were just the People at that time, believed that the gods had created them to be Caretakers of their home world. Even the People knew that the skills that the gods had given them were odd skills to give a Caretaker, but nothing else made sense. Certainly, the gods did not need them as soldiers, or as helpers of any sort.
The gods had made the People very long-lived, and very slow to procreate. The gods had gifted the Slaver's Push to the People, and their territoriality and ambition was as boundless as their intellect. The wars and battles built into their natures is what held the population in check, even with the low birth rate.
The people had a pattern of creating relatively high civilizations before their incessant conflict would cause a fall, only to rise again. One advantage that the People had was long life. There always lived those who knew the lessons learned before.
The People created Kingdoms and Republics, but they never lasted, because everyone had the ambition to be a King. The history of the People went that way for millions of years, and more than once, they made it all the way to the other planets of their system.
Colonies of the people flowered, only to be destroyed by the ambition of the species. Two hundred million years ago, the world changed. The gods stopped coming back to visit the People. The People speculated that the gods might have died, or ascended to another state of existence. Whatever happened to them, it unleashed the full nature of the people, without the psychological restraint of the god's existence.
When the gods stopped coming, Anu, father of Enlil and Enki, was king. He put his boot on the neck of the world, and became the first and last of the World Kings. His own grandfather had died only about 350 million years ago, and he was of the first created generation. Anu's father had died barely fifty million years ago, and his was the second generation from the created.
Anu was of late middle age, only about six hundred million years of age, and the People were rapidly making their world uninhabitable. In his wisdom, he decreed that the People should create star craft capable of spreading the People to the stars, giving them space for living. He appointed his gifted son Enki with the task of creating the space technology to send his family to safety. Enki set to work.
He created a rift portal technology, stressing local space to make tears or instantaneous wormholes to distant places. The massive ship that they were building would carry this rift generator in its nose, and they would cross the gulf of space in a fraction of a second. At least, that was how it was supposed to go.
With the family loaded up, the crew opened the rift portal hundreds of times, searching for a suitable target planet. They finally found a planet that had everything they wanted home to have, and it was just twelve hundred light years away.
They put the ship into the rift, and after the virtual particle flash finally dimmed, they found themselves in a strange system, closing in on a cluster of planets unlike the ones they had sought. Even stranger, the third planet from the star had nearly the same contours that their former home planet had.
Anu was suspicious of the third planet, and decided that they would base themselves on the fourth planet, while they investigated. The Fourth planet was nearly as viable as the third one was, with just a little amplification of the planetary magnetic field, it would make a good temporary new home.
They landed the great ship on Mars, and Enki went to work, trying to find out what went wrong. After a long investigation, he discovered that the rift opened to an almost infinite number of possible destinations, and the possibility of actually obtaining any one specific destination was almost zero. They were just lucky to have arrived in a habitable system.
Careful analysis of the distant Earth confirmed that it was virtually identical to the home planet, as it was more than 1.1 billion years before. It was almost identical, but with a few small differences in species. The Solar system also was almost the same as the home system, but the fourth planet had become a second asteroid belt there, and it was not shattered here.
The only answer that made sense was that this planetary system was in a parallel universe to the one from which the Anunnaki (the descendants of Anu) came. Of all the possible destinations available from the rift portal, they had managed to make their way across the multiverse veil, to a parallel to their home planet's system.
No reasonable possibility existed of ever finding their way home again, and no real reason why they should. This system was perfectly suited to the Anunnaki. They could live their lives on the verdant Mars, and when the population merited it, they could colonize the Earth.
They lived their lives on Mars for ten million years in relative peace, ruled by the iron, but fair, fist of Anu. They raised great cities and monuments on the planet, and they explored the other planets and orbital bodies of the system, to see what bounty awaited their greedy grasp.
Enlil and Enki were young, but mature, and the years of picking fights without thought were behind them. A new crop of Anunnaki arrived at their adolescence, and young adulthood, during the ten million years of peace, and the conflict between them became common in the eleventh and twelfth million years of the Anunnaki colony on Mars.
The sons and daughters of Anu had children, the cousins of Anu's children had children, and they all wanted to carve out their own kingdoms on Mars. It was in their nature to war with one another, but in the eleventh Megaannum, the wars had escalated to a number of small nuclear exchanges.
One particularly violent exchange caused Anu to rethink his policy. He decided that the need to become a King was too hard-wired into the Anunnaki blood to continue the current arrangement. He would always be High King, but he decided that the children must all have their own kingdoms to play with.
He opened up the Earth to colonization, and parceled Mars into kingdoms that he gifted to the children according to their loyalties. The Brothers, Enki and Enlil, were sent to Earth to oversee the colonization process. Anu instructed Enki to create suitable subject species for the new Anunnaki kings. After all, what is a kingdom, without adoring Subjects?
Enki settled into the area of Africa now known as Ethiopia, building a modest city for his activities, and analyzing the local primate populations for genetic modification suitability. The first thing that he noticed was that the primates all carried one extra pair of chromosomes.
Enki cut and spliced the chromosomes of a suitable subspecies of primate that resembled modern day chimpanzees. He combined two pairs of the modified chromosomes to create the necessary 23 pair genetic format, creating the first of the long line of proto-human creatures.
These creatures were far from human, or Anunnaki, but they could learn to do certain simple tasks. Enki had also created an extensive line of robotic workers, so most of the daily activities were handled, either robotically, or by use of the simian workforce.
Once the essence of the creatures was set, Enki made variations for various activities. He made giants for heavy lifting, and he made various lithe forms for various sporting events, such as gladiatorial contests. He recognized that the real objective of the project, creating a smaller, weaker version of the Anunnaki as subjects for his family members, would take millions of years to complete.
Over the span of thirty-five million years, he constantly tinkered with the nature of the animal that would one day become Man, creating specialized helpers and subjects, giants, chimera of various forms, and finally, some of the more primitive Neanderthal.
Finally, in the last three or four million years, he developed the modern versions of Neanderthal, and Cro Magnon Man. He continued to tinker with both variants of humanity, especially when he discovered the wild talents that both forms exhibited.
The gods had created the People, and bestowed one extrasensory talent upon them, the Slaver Push. No other paranormal power developed in the People, except for a minor telepathic power that was part of the Push. Neanderthals and Homo sapiens exhibited a startling array of wild talents, not the least of which was the ability to go to other places that the Anunnaki could not go, by either teleportation, or by some strange ability to navigate the multiverse veil mentally. This required endless study.
During the long study of Enki, several things happened to upset the worlds. The last of the Anunnaki fled Mars, after a particularly vicious nuclear war made it uninhabitable. Enki's father, Anu, died of old age at the young age of eight hundred million years old, and Enlil took it upon himself to try to assume the mantle of High King.
The years ground on, and the new variations of hominoids and hominids continued to be produced in the laboratory of Enki. A number of these went into the wild places, either escaping the confines of Enki's city, or actually released, to make their own ways in the world. The red haired giants spread throughout the world, both the old world and the new one, followed by the aboriginal form of human, around seventy thousand years ago.
With modern Cro Magnon as the wished for, scaled down Anunnaki, all the God-Kings of Earth received their own little stable of subjects. The last of the Neanderthals were released into the wild for so long as they could make their way within the world.
The Anunnaki were the powers behind each of the great civilizations of the ancient world. Anunnaki blood created Atlantis, Mu, the Rama Empire, the Sumerian Empire, and Egypt. By the time of Atlantis, the Anunnaki had interbred with the human subjects to such an extent that the half-breeds were far more common than the pure bloods.
In all the centuries, Enlil sought to rule over all the kingdoms of the Anunnaki, and Enki struggled to ensure that Enlil's power did not become absolute. When Enlil raised up the arrogant half Anunnaki peoples of Atlantis, Enki contested his power by raising up the kingdom of Rama. When Enlil sought to destroy the bloodline of the Akkads, and its descendants the Hebrews, it was Enki who led the Hebrews to safety as their god Jehovah.
One by one, the pure blood Anunnaki fell, lost to battle, or to treachery, until finally, Enki and Enlil were the last remaining pure bloods, as far as they could tell. All the others had perished over the years, and all that remained was the blood heritage, diluted within the blood of those who were once their subjects and sex mates.
The Anunnaki were gone, save for the brothers, and the heritage of ambition, and of hubris, which was the essence of the Anunnaki, were now the nature of Man. It was the curse that most threatened the human race. The irony was that interbreeding had created the ideal subjects for Enlil, the flawed and diminished Anunnaki called Man.
The bonus was that Mankind had more paranormal potential than the Anunnaki ever did, but they also had almost no defenses against the Slaver Push. This meant that all the potential of humanity was Enlil's to use as he saw fit, if ever Enki should stop the struggle.
"That is why we need to stop my brother," Enki concluded. "He will use humans to create the perfect universal Kingship for himself, and one day, he will learn the wild talents of humanity, or find someone he can compel to give him those powers, and then he will hold sway over your species, and this universe, forever."
