Treading quietly on the paving stones he approached the heap of leaves and grass clippings, but before he could reach it a youth stepped out from behind the stone wall.
“Mr. Monfort?” he whispered.
Not a vagrant then. How would a vagrant know his name?
“Yes.” Matthew saw no reason why he should whisper too. This was his home after all.

“…threw my cheroot at you,” Matt finished for him, grinning. “Sorry.”
“Er…yes.” The youth’s lips twitched and he brushed at a scorch mark on his jacket.
“Did it burn you?”
“It doesn’t matter.”
“So…what is wrong with my front door?”
“Your front door?” the boy repeated, looking puzzled.
“All my other callers come via the front entrance.”
The boy glanced furtively behind him. “I must not be seen.”
“Why? What have you done?”
