Frank planned a quiet afternoon of model aeroplane building, but unfortunately he failed to take his father-in-law into account.
A Liverpool family in South Africa in the 1970s
When Frank Turner announced he was taking up model aeroplane building his wife put her foot down. “You’re not bringing any of that modelling stuff into my house,” she told him, having seen the mess their neighbour had made in his spare bedroom. “You can build ‘em in the garage,” she finished, arms resolutely folded.
“But, Mave,” pleaded Frank, “I’ll need a big table to work on.”
“Well it won’t be my dining table,” Mavis replied.
But a few weeks later, when Mavis went out with her friends for the afternoon, Frank saw the opportunity he’d been waiting for. The car was barely out of the driveway before he was on the ‘phone to his neighbour. “Eric, she’ll be gone all afternoon. We can spread the modelling stuff on the dining table and you can help me build.” A few minutes later Eric was knocking on Frank’s door.
