I said, in my defence, that James was losing his mind and Richard should not heed the ramblings of a daft old man.
Richard scraped the bread and butter from the floor and passed it to me. I gave it to the cat and it licked the butter with relish. Then I left the house and wandered the street of Stonham contemplating the missing poison.
I was out for several hours. When I returned James had eaten and was resting quietly. Sibella and her daughter slept and the room enjoyed a peaceful calm I hardly recognised. Even when John and William returned, peace reigned for a while. Then, in the dark of the night, James screamed as if a thousand devils were torturing his soul.
The screeches were as penetrating as the cry of an animal at abattoir and the whole house roused, beginning with the squalling baby.
