If you have recently been appointed to a state board or commission in Mississippi, congratulations. This book is for you. While some commissioners are elected, such as Public Service Commissioners or Transportation Commissioners, the vast majority are appointed.
This is specifically written for executive branch boards and commissions. As will be touched on later, many of the rules are different for boards in the judicial and legislative branches.
Why were you appointed? For many boards, members are appointed because they are members of a profession who are willing to help govern their profession. For some, the qualification is basically a willingness to serve, although residency in a particular county or district may be required. Either way, you were probably not appointed because of any special expertise in state government.
